Summary 1. The WS strain of Influenza A, the Shope strain of swine influenza A, and the Sendai strain of Newborn Pneumonitis Virus multiplied in cultures of kidney cells obtained from man, rhesus monkey, beef embryo, rabbit, guinea pig, hamster, mouse and chick embryo. 2. The WS, NWS and PR8 strains of influenza A were passed readily in monkey kidney cultures. A England 1951 and other egg adapted strains were not passed successfully. 3. Study of strains passed in monkey kidney cultures indicated that the PR8 strain had gained virulence for these cultures with an associated increase in virulence for mice but no change inβ inhibitor sensitivity. The WS strain had not gained virulence for cultures or mice but had lost sensitivity toβ inhibitor.
