Abstract:
We have read the article of Drs. Chu, Clements, Cotton, Klaus, Sweet, Thomas, and Tooley (Pediatrics, 35:733, 1965) with interest but some dismay. Investigation of the pathogenesis of the respiratory distress syndrome has been hampered by confusion concerning terminology and we cannot help feeling that the introduction of yet another title for the illness is bound to add to this confusion, particularly when the evidence that pulmonary hypoperfusion is the "central issue" in the etiology of the disease seems somewhat tenuous on the data presented.
