Abstract: The acceleration of a plasma bunch by the radiation pressure was investigated experimentally with pulsed operation of a 2 MW magnetron. A plasma gun was contrived and used as an injector that produced a small bunch of plasma containing 10 12-14 ion pairs. Carbon ions and fluoric ones, which were main components of the plasma, were accelerated up to 70 keV at the highest and to 4.6 keV on the average. Theoretical predictions were verified as far as the acceleration of a plasma bunch by the single reflection of the wave was concerned.

Abstract: The acceleration of a plasma bunch in an evacuated waveguide by the pressure of a powerful microwave is investigated theoretically. It is indicated that the pressure exerted on the plasma is increased by equipping the accelerating waveguide with a microwave filter. A large portion of the electromagnetic energy fed into the waveguide can be transferred to the plasma. The problem of focusing is treated for simple configurations of plasma in rectangular waveguides by calculating the field pattern and applying the method of effective potential. Under proper conditions the accelerating wave acts to focus the plasma bunch. The dissipation of electromagnetic energy in this method of acceleration is discussed.
