Notes: An algorithm for suboptimal control of nonlinear unconstrained systems is developed. The result is closed loop, uses the familiar linear-quadratic optimal approach, and minimizes computational time and effort. Numerous examples are presented.

Notes: The previous development in suboptimal control of nonlinear unconstrained systems is extended to constrained systems by the use of penalty functions in an augmented sense. This converts the constrained control problem into an unconstrained one with all of the advantages previously discussed. Numerical examples are presented.

Notes: Many industrial processes are difficult to control because product quality cannot be measured economically on line. One solution to this problem is to use secondary measurements in conjunction with a mathematical model of the process to estimate product quality. This paper presents a method for designing a static estimator which predicts product quality from a linear combination of process input and output measurements. The design method includes procedures for selecting a subset of the availble output measurements so as to obtain an estimator which is relatively insensitive to modeling errors and measurement noise. Application of the estimator to a simulated multicomponent distillation column shows that the composition control achieved with an estimator based on temperature, reflux, and steam flow measurements is comparable to that achieved with instantaneous composition measurements. The composition control using the estimator is far superior to the composition control achieved by attempting to maintain a constant temperature on any single stage of the column.

Notes: An experimental and analytical investigation of heat transfer in an acceleration induced transitional flow regime is presented. A previously developed criterion for the onset of reverse transition of turbulent boundary layers is combined with a theory of forward transition to derive the effect of free-stream turbulence intensity on the critical value of an acceleration parameter for two initial velocity profiles within the turbulent boundary layer. The results are consistent with experimental observations.Local heat transfer measurements were obtained along converging walls of rectangular flow channels having convergence angles of 45, 60, and 70 deg. Free-stream turbulence (1.6 to 11%) was induced by grids upstream of the start of convergence, and the local Reynolds number were varied by variation in channel size and stagnation pressures (200 to 500 lb./sq.in. abs.) at a gas stagnation temperature of 1,500°R.The results indicate a two-stage reverse transition process along the converging wall with a forward transition between the two stages of reverse transition. The local Nusselt numbers obtained over a wide range of an acceleration parameter are correlated with the local Reynolds number, the acceleration parameter at the start of convergence, and the local flow area contraction ratio. The corrlation is in the form of laminarization paths having negative slopes for (NNu)r/(NPr)0.4 vs. (NRe)r at common area ratios. Local values of free-stream turbulence intensity are required for proper application of the reverse transition criterion in conjunction with the heat transfer correlation presented.

Notes: A study of the feasibility of using ion exchange resin systems for carbon dioxide absorption from gas streams was completed with the conclusion that such a system could compete very successfully with atmospheric control systems now in use. A detailed study of such a system based on polyethylenimine showed that this material is superior to any of the commercially available weak base resins tested. The kinetic data obtained correlated very well when a model was postulated that was based on diffusive transfer through a gas film, a water film, and the resin particle in series, with diffusion with the resin particle as the rate determining step.
