Summary A critical examination of the theory and of the determination of internal waves results in the following discernment: The model of a two-layer ocean shows the internal oscillations of a continuously stratified ocean only in a modified way. It may, however, be considered as a means to characterize the respective processes. When analyzing internal waves it is necessary to extend the time of observation to one or two periods at least. The method of auto-correlation after Fuhrich is considered to be the most effective means to eliminate accidental disturbances and to determine the periodical oscillations occurring in a series of observations. The results obtained when applying this method verify the supposition that internal waves are to be found all over the world. In addition to tidal periods, internal waves of some importance caused by meteorological conditions are to be expected to occur in areas characterized by variable wind and atmospheric pressure fields.
