Notes: Abstract The question of convergency in integral methods for rarefied gasdynamics is examined through the example of low-speed flow over a sphere. The four-moment solution and the six-moment solution both compare favorably with experimental data for drag and heat transfer over the entire range of gas density. Discrepancy between the two solutions show a maximum of 0.6% in drag coefficient and a difference of the order of Mach number squared in heat transfer.

Notes: Abstract A case of osteoid osteoma of the spine that recurred as an osteoblastoma 16 years after surgery is reported. Consequently, the authors suggest that osteoid osteoma and osteoblastoma originate from the same cellular element and are of the same nature. The only differences are their size and the reaction of the bone at the site of the lesion, which gives controversial clinical pictures and roentgenologic appearances, simulating two unrelated tumors.

Notes: Abstract This paper considers optimal control problems involving the minimization of a functional subject to differential constraints, terminal constraints, and a state inequality constraint. The state inequality constraint is of a special type, namely, it is linear in some or all of the components of the state vector. A transformation technique is introduced, by means of which the inequality-constrained problem is converted into an equality-constrained problem involving differential constraints, terminal constraints, and a control equality constraint. The transformation technique takes advantage of the partial linearity of the state inequality constraint so as to yield a transformed problem characterized by a new state vector of minimal size. This concept is important computationally, in that the computer time per iteration increases with the square of the dimension of the state vector. In order to illustrate the advantages of the new transformation technique, several numerical examples are solved by means of the sequential gradient-restoration algorithm for optimal control problems involving nondifferential constraints. The examples show the substantial savings in computer time for convergence, which are associated with the new transformation technique.

A field-effect-transistor (f.e.t.) amplifier was integrated into the system, and its effectiveness was investigated. The average e.m.f. efficiency of the developed electrode was 0·87±0·11V, and a minimum length of 7 mm was required for a goodpH response. Temperature dependence of the electrode was −1·51 mV/oK at apH of 7. Evaluation of the stability of the electrode showed a 1% drift over a 7 h operational time. ThepH and temperature hysteresis effects showed 0·5% and 1·0% deviations, respectively. The response time was within 4 s for 99% response. These electrode characteristics were also investigated in blood plasma and discussed.

Notes: Summary The sound propagation through a nonuniform turbulent jet flow field is studied by means of a system of linearized equations governing the acoustic variables. These equations depend on the fluctuating flow-field variables which can be prescribed by experimental results. It is shown that the correlations of the acoustic variables depend throughout the flow field on the space-time correlation of the turbulent velocities and on the mean flow variables and their gradients.

Notes: Two coenzyme-dependent oxidoreductases, glucose dehydrogenase and alcohol dehydrogenase, were immobilized in polyacrylamide gel over a platinum grid matrix and used as enzyme electrodes to measure their substrate concentrations in buffered aqueous solutions. The immobilized enzymes were used to oxidize their substrates in the presence of NAD+. Ferricyanide was used as the redox mediator and electroactive specific. The determinations of glucose and ethenol were utilized to demonstrate and evaluate the performance of the system. The described methodology should be readily applicable to the analysis of numerous other substrates of coenzyme-dependent oxidoreductases.

Notes: Glucose oxidase electrodes were constructed on a platinum screen using polyacrylamide gel, glutaraldehyde crosslinking, and glutaraldehyde crosslinking with +0.04 volts dc on the platinum screen as the methods of enzyme immobilization. The electrodes were evaluated in an electrochemical cell for the oxidation of glucose at the enzyme electrode and the reduction of oxygen at a platinum auxiliary electrode, using constant current voltametry or under external load operation. The method of immobilization affected the extrapolated opencircuit potential as well as the half-cell potential and the steady current under external load operation. The charged glutaraldehyde electrode gave the best current performance; however, the small output (microamps) indicated that major problems in electron transfer from an enzyme catalyst to an external circuit must be resolved before such electrodes can be used in practical application.
