Notes: Abstract An entire bed of the blue mussel Mytilus edulis, consisting of 5,000 individuals/m2, died during June, 1971 in the effluent canal of a steam generating plant when the temperature increased above 27°C. Similarly, the population in the intake canal disappeared when temperatures rose above 27°C in August. Laboratory studies showed that M. edulis could not tolerate continuous temperatures above 27°C, and feeding stopped shortly after the mussels were exposed to 25°C. Histopathological studies indicated that the cause of death of this bivalve was associated with degeneration of the frontal and laterofrontal cilia of the columnar epithelium of the gill filaments. In conjuction with this, there was necrosis and sloughing of the epithelium of the intestinal diverticula. Extensive amoebocytic infiltration was noted in the byssogenous cavity, gill filaments and stomach wall.

Notes: Summary The rate of cholesterogenesis in rat liver, measured by the incorporation of labelled acetate or mevalonate into cholesterol, was significantly supressed by the use of 4-methyl-5-hydroxy valeric acid sodium salt. This effect cannot be explained by changes in HMG CoA reductase activity.

Notes: Summary Renal damage is one of the most serious complications of diabetes mellitus. Most methods used to detect kidney malfunction show abnormalities only in the advanced stages. To find whether sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) of the urinary proteins could give earlier indications of kidney malfunction, 68 patients with maturity-type diabetes and 22 with juvenile-type diabetes have been studied. Quantitative determination of proteinuria, urinary lysozyme, creatinine clearance and SDS-PAGE of urinary proteins were performed. Diabetics of both types with disease of more than 10 years duration showed significantly greater proteinuria and lysozymuria, higher serum creatinine values and lower creatinine clearances than their respective controls. Such differences were not seen in patients with diabetes of short duration. SDS-PAGE allowed detection of a higher proportion of patients with abnormalities. Thus, 3 out of 10 patients with juvenile diabetes of short duration showed predominant excretion of low molecular weight proteins, suggesting tubular dysfunction. This was not observed in the other groups of diabetics where increased elimination of high molecular weight proteins was noted, suggesting glomerular damage. SDS-PAGE revealed a higher frequency of abnormalities than other tests of renal function, with 67% abnormal in juvenile-type diabetes of greater than 10 years duration, 45% in maturity-type diabetes of less than 10 years duration and 76% abnormal in maturity-type diabetes of greater than 10 years duration.

Notes: Summary We studied simultaneously in serum (S) and CSF (L) the enzyme activities of GOT, GPT, LDH, ICDH, MDH, ALD, and CPK in 28 patients with head injuries divided into three groups according to the severity of the trauma. We found a correlation between severity of brain lesion and enzyme activity. The best correlation was found for SGOT, SCPK, LGOT, LLDH, LMDH and LCPK. We do not believe that enzyme activity is of prognostic value. We think that further studies should be made of the specific isoenzymes of the Central Nervous System.

Notes: Summary The presence of mucopolysaccharides (MP) in Neurospora crassa hyphae was detected in samples of cultures from 4 h to 5 days. Using a modification of the method of Rothman (1969), acid MP were identified by electron microscopy in vesicles located at the apex, septae, and throughout the cytoplasm of the hyphae. The size, number, and localization of these vesicles was related to the stage of growth of the fungus. The mechanisms of release and transport of these macromolecules are compared to the process of secretion in cells endowed with a better developed endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi system. The specificity of the method was evaluated histochemically. The structures displaying greater electron density corresponded to the Alcian blue positive areas.

Notes: Abstract Critical thermal maxima (CTM) were determined for winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus, Walbaum) and scup (Stenotomus chrysops, L.), acclimated to ambient water temperature or constant increments above ambient. The acclimation regimes simulated a natural environment by tracking the temperature fluctuations in Point Judith Pond, a small Rhode Island estuary. An elevation in CTM from 30.2° to 35.6°C was observed for scup as the mean acclimation temperature increased from 14.8° to 22.2°C. CTM for flounder increased from 26.4° to 32.4°C over an acclimation range of 4.2° to 23.0°C. The use of CTM studies for predicting the effects of heated effluents is discussed.

Notes: Eight imide-diacids were synthesized from trimellitic anhydride, pyromellitic anhydride and aminoacids of the formula HOOC—(CH2)n—NH2, with n = 1,2,3,5. From them, polyanhydride-imides were obtained following a general method of formation of polyanhydrides in the presence of acetic anhydride1,2.These co-polyimides have an aliphatic-aromatic structure and the relation between the general properties and the amount of the aliphatic part in the repeat unit was studied. IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis and viscosity measurements were used for the characterization. Studies of solubility, hydrolysis resistance and thermal properties were also made.

Notes: Periodate oxidation of polysaccharides shows inhibitory neighbor effects due to hemiacetal formations. A second periodate oxidation may be performed after removal of all protecting hemiacetals formed in the first oxidation. We give the theoretical analysis of the kinetics of such repeated oxidations. For complete protection the oxidation limit of the second reaction, as function of the extent of the first oxidation, lies between 41.1 and 43.2%, in good agreement with experiments on alginate. For general protection effects we calculate the degree of oxidation and the mean sequence lengths of the three types of monomer units. Second-oxidation data, in contradistinction to first-oxidation results, allow separate determination of left-and right-hand inhibitory effects.
