Abstract:
Recurrent ceremonial assemblies, each of which predominate in a different region of Scotland, are described. These innovative forms are discussed in relation to Scottish history and tradition; and their symbolic efficacy as rural pilgrimage centers is considered. These recurrent ceremonial assemblies are shown to play a significant organizational role as links between urban centers and hinterland regions.
