    Mental health students' reactions to a group training conference: Understanding from a systems perspective (1975)

    Notes: Summary This is an investigation of the experience of a group of mental health students who, as part of their training, participated in a four day non-residential Group Relations Conference composed of analytically oriented (Tavistock) and social psychologically oriented (NTL) groups. The investigation focuses on who subsequently joins groups, what is learned in Tavistock and NTL groups, and the relationship between the Training Conference and the progress or initiation of psychotherapy. Striking similarity is found among those who join and those who do not join groups following the conference. Learning in the conference centers on issues of power and authority and less on more personal, individual concerns. The absence of “group casualties” is noted. In order to place the results in a broader framework the findings are evaluated from a systems perspective.

    Notes: Summary Intact, sham-pinealectomized and pinealectomized adult male rats were maintained for 10 weeks on a light∶dark (L∶D) cycle of 12∶12, with lights on at 6 a.m. Subsequently they were acutely exposed to (1) visual or (2) audiogenic stress for periods of 2 or 30 min, immediately following which they were decapitated and serum ACTH, corticosterone, FSH, LH, PRL and TSH concentrations were determined. Serum ACTH and corticosterone levels were similar in control and operated groups following both types of stresses. Serum FSH and LH concentrations were elevated in pinealectomized animals as compared to controls, following 30 min of exposure to visual stimulation; no difference in these parameters was observed between the groups following audiogenic stress. Serum PRL levels tended to be lower in pinealectomized animals following both stresses. Serum TSH concentrations following visual stimulation were similar in all groups, but audiogenic stimulation resulted in elevated TSH levels as compared to controls. These data demonstrate that the pineal gland plays an integral role in the responses of the parvicellular neuroendocrine axes to acute neurogenic stress. Possible molecular bases for this involvement are discussed.

Die ersten beiden sind passagere Verfahren und ergänzen die definitiven nuklearmedizinischen und operativen Behandlungsmaßnahmen. Differentialtherapeutische Erwägungen knüpfen sich an Lebensalter und Kropfgröße. Für ca. 60 % aller Fälle ist die Radiojodtherapie optimal, je größer eine hyperthyreotische Struma, desto eher ist die Operation indiziert. Detaillierte Gesichtspunkte werden anhand von 3580 eigenen Fällen von Hyperthyreose erörtert.
    Notes: Summary Special procedures are: (1) Short-term treatment with steroid hormones; (2) antithyroid substances; (3) radioactive iodine; (4) operation. The first two methods are complementary to the definitive procedures of isotope and surgical therapy. The indications conform to the age of the patient and the size of the goiter. The treatment of choice in 60 % of all cases is radioactive iodine; 20–25 % are treated with antithyroid substances only for several years. The remaining cases, complicated by goiters of size II and more, should be handled surgically. Discussion based on personal experience with 3580 cases over 20 years).

    Notes: Summary Biopsy derived tumor cells have been tested for capacity to induce DNA synthesis in autologous blood lymphocytes in vitro (ATS test). In the present series 5/20 biopsies were ATS positive when mechanically separated cells were used. Preincubation of the tumor cells at 37° C, but not at 0° C, markedly increased the stimulating capacity. Parallel experiments gave 7/9 positive tests with preincubated and 3/9 positive tests with cells used directly. When the biopsy cells were brought into suspension by enzyme treatment they did not stimulate unless incubated at 37° C before confronting the lymphocytes. In accordance with previous results, the presence of autologous serum during ATS inhibited the reaction.

    Notes: Summary Of 112 patients (maximum age 70 years) with acute nonlymphocytic leukemia, 62 (55%) went into remission on an induction therapy of cytosine arabinoside and daunorubicin. 20 patients were randomized for maintenance treatment consisting of chemotherapy only and 22 patients for combined chemo-immunotherapy. The chemotherapy consisted in 5-day courses of daunorubicin and cytosine arabinoside and of thioguanine and cytosine arabinoside, alternating every month. The chemo-immunotherapy group also received weekly intracutaneous injections of 109 allogeneic nonirradiated leukemic myeloblasts and 106 BCG organisms (Glaxo) by Heaf gun. The median duration of the first remission was 164 days for the chemotherapy group and 464 days for the chemo-immunotherapy group. The corresponding median times of survival were 344 days for the first group and 734 days for the second group. The difference concerning median duration of survival is statistically significant. Thus immunotherapy seems to prolong survival.

    Notes: Abstract Using the method ofγ-detection, the NMR in the metastable 40 keV-state of103Rh in Fe (thin foils with diffused103Pd activity) was measured in external fields of 0.5 to 14 kG. We find a zero-field resonance frequency ofv 0=(550.3±0.5) MHz and a slope ofdv/dH= −(0.933 ±0.017) MHz/kG, yielding g=1.22 ± 0.02. The resulting value for the hyperfine field, Hhf=(590±10) kG, is inconsistent with that of an NMR measurement in the ground state of103Rh. Possible reasons for this discrepancy are discussed.

    Notes: To measure the Kapitza resistance between a solid and liquid helium, a thin sample is immersed in the liquid and subjected to pulsed heating. The Kapitza resistance is determined from the time variation of the sample temperature, measured by a built-in nuclear orientation thermometer. The system Au/dilute 3He-4He is used as an example.     Description / Table of Contents: Summary An attempt is made to explain the significance of intracellular endobiosis for the human acquisition of immunity against cyclic infectious diseases. It is pointed out that, taking into account the temporally limited reduplication of an immune-potent cell clone, a species-specific induction of immunity against infections and other diseases is sustained for a sufficiently long period of time only by a microorganism which is still living.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Es wird der Versuch gemacht, die Bedeutung der intrazellulären Endobiose zum Immunitätserwerb des Menschen für zyklische Infektionskrankheiten zu klären. Es wird dargestellt, daß eine artspezifische Induktion für Infektions-und Krankheitsimmunität unter Berücksichtigung einer zeitlich begrenzten Reduplikation eines immunpotenten Zellklon nur durch einen noch vitalen Einzeller ausreichend lange erhalten bleibt.

    Notes: Abstract We report β-particle and γ-ray angular distribution measurements from60Co oriented in CoAu at low temperatures in applied fields up to 72 kOe and Co concentrations of 0.95 to 11 at.%. The results are explained by assuming a random molecular field interaction between groups of Co impurities. The hyperfine field on Co nuclei in groups of three or more nearest neighbors is negative and has a value near −180 kOe. The induced field on Co-pair nuclei is small and probably also negative. Complete polarization of the Co moments in the more concentrated alloys requires a very large applied field.
