Notizen: Abstract The system Na2O-K2O-Al2O2-SiO2-H2O contains many mineral phases of major importance in the diagenesis and metamorphism of shales and sandstones, as well as in felsic igneous rocks and their metamorphic derivatives. It is thus a useful model-system containing many of the key equilibria of concern in the genesis of such rocks. It is also a system for which extensive experimental and thermodynamic data are available. The discontinuous reactions among the phases quartz, albite, potassic feldspar, muscovite, paragonite, pyrophyllite, kaolinite, kyanite, andalusite, sillimanite, jadeite and analcime have therefore been used to construct a model system for mineral facies in “pelitic” rocks. There appear to be fiftynine possible facies types, separated by forty-one discontinuities, only thirtysix of which are readily observed in the field. The continuous reactions, involving rotations of tie-line and displacements of three-phase triangles in the NaAlO2-KAlO2-Al2O3 projection from SiO2-H2O, may be formulated using either an Na or K end-member reaction together with Na-K exchange reactions between coexisting white micas, alkali feldspars and analcimes. The general stoichiometric coefficients for all likely discontinuous reactions have been evaluated in terms of mol fractions of end-members. Available experimental data have been used to calibrate the discontinuous equilibria for the limiting conditions of $$a_{{\text{H}}_{\text{2}} {\text{O}}}$$ = 0 and $$a_{{\text{H}}_{\text{2}} {\text{O}}}$$ = 1. The (Na-K) facies types may be correlated with (Fe-Mg) facies types in pelitic rocks or with assemblages in mafic rocks.

Notizen: Abstract Examples are given in which quasi-Newton and other conjugate descent algorithms fail to converge to a minimum of the object function. In the first there is convergence to a point where the gradient is infinite; in the second, a region characterized by a fine terraced structure causes the iterates to spiral indefinitely. A modification of the second construction gives convergence to a point where the gradient is non-zero, but the gradient is not continuous at this point. The implication of these examples is discussed.

Notizen: Abstract Alfvén has shown that in the symmetric cosmology of O. Klein, matter and antimatter can be separated as clouds of solar masses. By considering the dynamics of these clouds it is shown that a further separation process driven by the release of rest energy can separate matter on a galactic scale.

Notizen: Summary Plasma growth hormone (GH) concentrations in Parkinsonian patients following 3 months optimum therapy with bromocriptine showed no significant change from pretreatment values, whilst plasma prolactin concentrations were uniformly suppressed. Pretreatment GH and prolactin levels were unrelated to clinical disability, and no correlation between hormonal changes and therapeutic response was found. These results suggest the presence of different dopaminergic receptor mechanisms for GH and prolactin release as well as between the extrapyramidal and neuroendocrine systems.

Notizen: Abstract Measurements of the photoproduction processes γρ→ρ+ n and γρ→ρ-Δ++ (1236) are reported in the energy range 2.8 to 4.8 GeV. The data show shrinkage of the differential cross section in this energy region for the process γρ→ρ-Δ++ (1236); no shrinkage is observed for the ρ+ n process. The energy dependences of the ρ+ n and ρ-Δ++ (1236) total cross sections are much steeper than current model prediction. The ρ spin density matrices for each process are also presented.
