    Notes: Abstract The DNA, RNA and protein content of the cyanobacterium Anacystis nidulans was determined in light-limited and carbon dioxide-limited chemostat cultures over the dilution rate range, D=0.02 h-1 to 0.19 h-1. The macromolecular contents as a percentage of the dry weight and on a per cell basis varied significantly as a function of organism growth rate and the nature of the growth conditions. For both limitations the RNA content per cell increased [20–55 fg RNA (cell)-1] with increasing dilution rate and also showed an increase as a percentage of the dry weight. The DNA content as a percentage of the dry weight showed a 2-fold decrease with increasing dilution rate over the range examined. On a per cell basis DNA reached a peak at D=0.1 h-1 [4.5 fg DNA (cell)-1] for light-limited organisms and at D=0.08 h-1 [8.0 fg DNA (cell)-1] for carbon dioxide-limited organisms. The q RNA increased with increasing dilution rates over the complete growth rate range examined whilst q DNA reached a maximum at D=0.09 to 0.10 h-1. The protein content as a percentage of the dry weight was greater in CO2-limited organisms than light-limited organisms but in both cultures declined as the dilution rate was increased above D=0.10 h-1.

    Notes: Abstract Mating experiments between pairs of strains ofEscherichia coli containing either the compatible plasmids TP120 (Inc N) and R1 (Inc FII) or the incompatible plasmids TP125 (Inc B) and TP113 (Inc B) were undertaken in mixed continuous-flow cultures and in dialysis sacs suspended in pond water. Plasmid transfer was readily demonstrated between strains carrying compatible plasmids TP120 and R1 in both continuous-flow culture and pond water. In mixed cultures of strains carrying plasmids TP125 and TP113, transfer was only observed in continuous-flow culture systems. Strains ofE. coli containing aggregates of plasmids TP120 and R1 were shown to be stable over 5 months continuous cultivation under carbon limited conditions at a growth rate of 0.1 hours−1 in the presence of drugs which select for the maintenance of both plasmids. In the strains containing plasmid aggregates, a gene dosage effect was observed with respect to the levels of resistance to drugs whose resistance was encoded by both plasmids. Chemostat experiments showed that no cointegrate plasmids were found from the strains ofE. coli initially containing both plasmid TP120 and plasmid R1.

    Notes: Abstract The program for in vitro fertilization at Bourn Hall began in October 1980. Various types of infertility have been treated during this time using the natural menstrual cycle or stimulation of follicular growth with antiestrogens and gonadotrophins. Follicular growth and maturation are assayed by urinary estrogens and LH, monitored regularly during the later follicular stage. Many patients had an endogenous LH surge; others needed an injection of HCG to induce ovulation. All oocytes were recovered by laparoscopy. Wide variations occurred in the time interval between the start of the LH surge and oocyte recovery and between oocyte recovery and insemination. Embryos taken between ooc one- and the eight-cell stage were replaced into their mother, no standard procedure being adopted for all patients. The results of all treatments including patient's responses during the follicular and luteal phases, oocyte recovery, fertilization, cleavage, replacement, implantation, abortion, and birth and the effect of factors such as replacing two or more embryos, maternal age, and previous obstetric history are described in detail. The incidence of implantation after embryo replacement improved from 16.5% initially to 30% currently. More than 118 babies have been born, and many pregnancies are continuing.
