Notes: Summary Under the frozen storage at usual storage temperatures of leafy tissues not pretreated by heat, enzymatic lipid degradation reactions take place, which lead already after a few weeks to a considerable or complete loss of the native polar lipids. These degradation processes being accompanied by a deterioration of the flavour have been studied in greater detail in parsley leaves. Among the reaction products we found large amounts of 6-acylmonogalactosyl diglycerides (formed from monogalactosyl diglycerides by enzymatic transacylation) and phosphatidic acid (formed from phospholipids through phospholipase-D action). The generally assumed reaction sequence: formation of free fatty acids by acyl hydrolases followed by hydroperoxidation through lipoxygenase and degradation o f the hydroperoxides into off-flavour compounds may hence take place, if at all, only to a limited extent. Considerable phospholipase D as well as minor acyl transferase activities are still detected at −24

Notes: The calculation of the response of rotationally periodic structures to transient forces and prescribed motions is considered. The work extends the work previously described by Thomas1 in which only the free and harmonic forced vibration problems were considered. It is assumed that the finite element method is to be used, so that the equation of motion of the structure contains a finite number of degrees-of-freedom whose responses are governed by mass, stiffness and damping matrices. It is shown that an exact solution to the equation of motion of the idealized full structure can be obtained by solving the equation of motion of a single substructure for a number of different spatial Fourier harmonics of force (and hence response). A modal method of solving this equation is described. a brief description of the implementation of the method in a suite of computer programs, and the application of the programs to a practical problems, is also given.

Notes: A new method for solving structural dynamics problems has been proposed by the author in a separate paper.1 This method of solution produces a high order real symmetric eigenvalue problem of the form (A - λ B - λ2C - λ3D…)U = 0. An algorithm for solving such an eigenvalue problem using simultaneous iteration is presented in this paper. Methods of accelerating the convergence and reducing the amount of computation are also described. A numerical example is given in which the algorithm is used to calculate the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a framed structure.

Notes: The dynamic analysis of structures by the standard finite element method introduces additional inaccuracies into the solution which are not present when the method is used for static analyses. These inaccuracies can arise from two sources: (i) the element formulation and (ii) the reduction of the size of the matrices by a static condensation (i.e. using the Guyan method1,2). The errors in both cases are caused by neglecting frequency-dependent terms in the functions relating the displacements at any point in the structure to the displacements at certain fixed points (i.e. nodes in the element formulation and ‘masters’ in the condensation). A new method of solution is proposed in this paper in which the frequency-dependent terms are retained implicitly by using dynamic stiffness matrices defined at a number of fixed frequencies. The dynamic stiffness matrices may be condensed efficiently to a relatively small number of master degrees-of-freedom using a front solution algorithm. The final stage in the solution uses these matrices to synthesize a high-order eigenvalue problem. A method of solving such an eigenvalue problem, of arbitrary order, is described in a separate paper.3 Numerical examples are given to show the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method compared with conventional methods of solution.
