Abstract: A randomized block experiment, with four replications, was conducted on 64 Monterey pine Christmas trees in El Cajon, Calif. Most trees had a lower trunk diameter of ca. 3 in.; planting was on 5-ft centers. Soil type was Ramona sandy loam. Irrigation was by automatic overhead sprinklers that applied the equivalent of 1.5 in. of water every 10 days. In previous years tip moth in this block of trees had been kept under good insecticidal control. Each treated two-tree replicate was separated from others by at least one untreated row of trees. Treatments were applied on 21 Apr. by walking around each two-tree replicate-at least five times-until the container with a measured amount of insecticide was empty. Granulars were applied by shaking a 1-qt wide-mouth glass jar with many holes in lid. Flowables were diluted in 1 gal of water and applied with a sprinkling can. On dates indicated tip moth injury was evaluated by counting, beginning at tree top, 100 growth terminals on each of two sides of each tree. Data were subjected to log (x + 1) transformations and then to analyses of variance. Shaping of trees by shearing occurred between 18 Aug. and 22 Sep.

Abstract: In the southern San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles, Calif., 64 Siberian elm parkway trees were used in a RCB experiment with four replications. The trees were on 35 city blocks within a 24-square-mile area. All treatments, except on “on demand” treatments, were applied during the week of 9 May; “on demand” treatments were applied on 30 Jun. and were in response to the first citizen complaint about beetle damage. Trunk spray in a band between 4 and 7 ft of height with a high pressure spray wand also included blackstrap molasses at 2 qt/100 gal; the intended target was larvae migrating to the ground for pupation. All treatments, except trunk spray alone, were to whole tree. All treatments were buffered to pH 6.0. Samplings were on the dates indicated. A sample from each tree of a two-tree replicate included the 10 most-distal leaves of 10 peripheral twig terminals obtained with a 10-ft pole pruner. Only data on number of larvae were transformed to log10(n + 1).

Abstract: Near Lake Gregory, in the San Bernardino Mountains, California, 32 heavily infested trees of a homeowner were laid out in a randomized block experiment. Untreated check and treatments consisted of single tree plots replicated 4 times. Thorough coverage sprays, buffered to pH 6.5 and at 8.8 gal/tree, were applied with a power sprayer at 400 psi. At time of spraying the 25 foot tall trees on May 9 most buds were broken with young shoots out ca 3 inches; most young leaves were ca 0.5 inch long. At time of sampling on June 9 most normal leaves were fully expanded to 4 to 7 inches, and 50 per cent of larvae were fifth instar, and 38 per cent were fourth. Light- and medium-injury categories were also sampled but were less sensitive to differences than categories noted here. Heavy injury indicates 80 percent of leaf destroyed. A sample from each tree consisted of 10 peripheral terminals from ca 12 feet high, each terminal having ca 6 leaves. Counts were transformed to angles and subjected to analyses of variance; mean separations were for 19:1 odds by Duncan’s multiple range test.

Abstract: Suspended from the edge of a horizontally rotating 27 inch bicycle wheel, four 35 mm x 35 mm elm bark chips were sprayed with an insecticide during 1 pass before a compressed air paint spray gun beneath the wheel axle. The gun delivered 2.2 ml/sec and the wheel turned 4 rpm. This apparatus was in the opening of a laboratory evacuation hood. Bark chips, including some sapwood, had been cut with a band saw from 100 mm dia log disks from a recently felled tree. When each sprayed chip was nearly dry it was dropped into a 0.5 pt tapered Mason glass jar having a 100-mesh screen lid and the botton covered with a disk of paper towel. Beetles react abnormally on glass as compared with paper. The jar was placed in a randomized position on the first of 4 parallel lines on a laboratory table; the next jar was placed on the next line; etc. A draft of air from a household fan covered the table. The foregoing procedure was repeated for each insecticide. Sprays of all insecticides were agitated and buffered to pH 6. On each of the following 4 days a separate line of jars was infested with 25 beetles per jar from a laboratory culture of infested elm logs in 5 gal lard cans; each day represented 1 of 4 replicates. Moribund and dead beetles were counted after 24 hr. With poorer treatments this usually involved dissecting the chip to find the boring beetles. Results were subjected to a 2-way analysis of variance.

Abstract: Near Perris, California light, sandy loam soil, planted with pines, was injected Apr 6'71 with oxydemetonmethyl using a Fumigun {Neil Maclean Co., Belmont, Calif.). The Monterey pine Christmas trees were heavily infested with aphids and the landscape aleppo pines with mites. At 6 inch above ground trunks of the Monterey pines averaged 2.5 inch diameter and the aleppo pines 8 Inch. The soil was well irrigated by sprinklers 2 days before treatment. At each 6 inch deep soil insertion the Fumigun delivered 10 ml (=1.2 gm ai) of 1:1 watenoxydemetonmethyl 2EC solution. Soil insertions were distributed 6-9 inch apart evenly around the tree, beginning at 18 inch from the trunk of the Monterey pines and 36 inch from the aleppo pine. Three Monterey pines and an aleppo pine were treated at a rate of 12 gm ai/inch trunk diameter and three other Montereys at a 6 gm rate. Untreated check trees included 6 Montereys and one aleppo pine. At each sampling date 10 pine growing tips per tree, collected at random in a plastic sack, were thoroughly agitated with one pint of 70 percent ethyl alcohol which, for aphid or mite counts, was poured in an 8 × 10 inch white photographic tray having parallel ridges in the bottom. Collections were made just before treatments and at various intervals afterward.
