Kurzfassung:
Fernando Cardenal and Valerie Miller present a vivid, first-hand account of the massive"battle" for literacy in Nicaragua. Dedicating their article to the thousands who lost their lives in the fight against inequity, foreign domination, and military repression, the authors describe the political rationale and the extensive organizational tasks of the National Literacy Crusade, pointing out that its eventual success "depended on a commitment of the spirit—a commitment of a people and a government born of a liberation struggle."
