Summary Measurements of yellow substances carried out in February 1973 off Northwest Africa (Fig. 1) at spectral wave lengths between 230 nm and 250 nm indicate the formation of such substances near the coast and an exponential seaward diminution together with an offshore water movement. The half-life of the deterioration of this material is about 10 days with a clear increase towards the shorter wave part of the spectrum. The intensity of the production of yellow substances changes very much and fluctuates with the variation of the wind speed (North-East component) as indicator of the conditions of upwelling in a rhythm of nine days. With reservation, a release of yellow substances can be assumed first of all by damaged phytoplankton, possibly together with a second (optically weaker) maximum, consisting of substances with different degradation speed at the time of maximum growth.
