Notes: Maleic hydrazide (MH), a sprout inhibitor, was applied to potato plants in each of 2 yr. Tubers from these plants were examined for susceptibility to enzymatic discoloration and lipid content. Enzymatic darkening was greater, and both the crude lipid and phospholipid content lower, in tubers from plants treated with MH as compared with the controls. The fatty acid composition of the phospholipid fraction of MH-treated tubers exhibited a significant increase in saturated fatty acids and a decrease in unsaturated fatty acids. The exact mechanism of action of MH is unknown, but its effect on the lipid composition of tubers may be an important factor contributing to sprout inhibition. Since the lipid of the tuber is an important determinant of cellular integrity, the altered lipid composition resulting from treatment with MH may be an important factor contributing to the tuber's increased susceptibility to bruising and discoloration.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Microplitis croceipes (Cresson), Parasit der Heliothis-Larven, wurde in 9 Kombinationen von Wirtsinsekt/Wirtspflanze gezüchtet.
Notes: Summary Microplitis croceipes (Cresson), a parasitoid of Heliothis larvae, was reared on 9 host insect/plant combinations. In general, parasitoid survivorship was (1) higher in host larvae that were reared on cotton than in hosts reared on either bean or tomato, (2) higher in H. zea hosts than in H. virescens and (3) higher in a laboratory strain of H. zea than in a wild strain. A series of parasitoid oviposition preference tests showed that wasps laid more eggs in host larvae on cotton plants than on bean and more on bean than on tomato. However, the wasps did not distinquish between H. zea and H. virescens hosts. Wasp oviposition preferences were not conditioned by the host insect/plant combination in which the parasitoid developed. These results indicate that the plant on which host larvae feed is an important factor in determining both the likelihood of parasitoid attack and the probability of successful parasitism.

Description / Table of Contents: Easy Syntheses of Sulfur-Nitrogen CompoundsThe sulfonamide CF3SO2NH2 (2a) reacts with S3N2Cl2 1, which can be prepared from urea and S2Cl2, to yield S3N3SO2CF3 3 with formation of hydrogen chloride while CH3SO2NH2 (2b) yields (CH3SO2NSN)2S 4 under cleavage of the ring system of 1. Under similar conditions 1 reacts with SO2(NH2)2 to form S4N4O2 5. The structure of 5 is confirmed by X-ray analysis. The hydrolysis of 1 with anhydrous formic acid or acetic anhydride yields S3N2O 6. Five-membered S3N2-rings 9a-c are formed by the reaction of S4N4 with the anhydrides (FSO2)2O, (CF3CO)2O, and (CCl3CO)2O.

Description / Table of Contents: Preparation and Reactions of 1,2,3,5-Dithiadiazolium Chloride1,2,3,5-Dithiadiazolium chlorides 6a and 6b were prepared by the reaction of azines 4a, b with S3N3Cl3 (5). The chloride ion in 6a can be replaced by the following anions SbCl6- (7a), CF3SO3- (8a), N(SO2F)2- (9a), BF4- (10a), and PF6- (11a). All compounds are intensively yellow or red colored. On the basis of mass spectrometric investigations and by X-ray analysis the cation has the structure 6A. The NS2+-ion was observed in the mass spectrometer in high relative intensity. NS2+ is isoelectronic to CO2.
