Notes: A quantitative analysis of the various approximations to the scalar wave equation used in seismic migration can be obtained by a study of the resulting phase errors. In the space-time domain the effects of different modes of parameter optimization are displayed. In the space-frequency domain the spatial derivatives may be expanded as a linear filter operator whose coefficients are determined by requiring that the resulting phase shifts agree with those that arise from planar wave solutions of the exact wave equation over a range of angles and frequencies.

Notes: An electrostatic probe for ion temperature and density measurements was built and tested in the scrape-off region of the TBR-1 small tokamak. The main parameters involved in the design and details of the construction of the probe are presented. The electron discrimination and the probe efficiency for ion detection were checked by measuring the probe current as a function of the collector retraction length for a constant voltage. The results for the ion temperature and density obtained from the characteristic curves are discussed and compared with previous measurements.

Notes: Summary The main nerves of the pelvis and lower limbs arise from the lumbar and sacral plexuses. These nerves can be affected by any of a large number of pathologic processes that occur in the paravertebral and pelvic regions. Understanding of the neurological findings related to paravertebral and pelvic pathology needs complete and accurate knowledge of the anatomy of these regions. The axial transverse sections of computed tomography give perfect visualisation of the anatomy of osseous, muscular, and vascular structures of the vertebral and paravertebral area and pelvic walls. Visualisation of the nerves in this regions is much more difficult, because direct demonstration of nervous structures by computed tomography is usually impossible. To be able to identify components of the lumbosacral plexus on axial CT sections the radiologist has to know the location of the nervous structures and the relationships of these structures to vascular, muscular and osseous structures which are easily demonstrated.

Notes: Summary In situ measurements of nitrogenase activities in some rice soils, representing three different agroclimatic zones of Sri Lanka, demonstrated that there is a great potential for nitrogen fixation in these paddy soils, provided that they are continuously flooded and that nitrogenous fertilizer levels are relatively low. Under such conditions cyanobacterial (blue-green algal) fixation predominates. In certain areas of the wet zone, with highly organic soils, cyanobacterial fixation could probably meet a great part of the N-fertilizer input recommended. Heterotrophic rhizosphere fixation may also be significant, especially in the dry zone. Low concentrations of fertilizer-N were found to stimulate cyanobacterial numbers and total nitrogen fixation, at one site (dry zone), whereas high levels negatively affected total fixation at all sites investigated. In the absence of N-fertilizers, inoculation as well as additions of Mo, increased cyanobacterial numbers, nitrogen fixation activity and available ammonia levels substantially at the investigated site (dry zone). Rice grain yields did not vary significantly between treatments, because of too large a heterogeneity in the field with respect to water management.

Notes: Abstract A method for the production of no carrier added and residue free22Na, was developed via the24Mg/d, α/22Na nuclear reaction applying 14 MeV deuterons and a high current Mg−Cu target. The yield for the reaction target. The yield for the reaction was measured and the chemical separation performed using a Dowex 50WX8 resin in H+ form. The overall yield was higher than 98%. Residue could not be detected. All experiments were carried out at IEN's CV-28 cyclotron.

Notes: Abstract The isotope260Lr, produced in reactions of18O with249Bk, was used to perform chemical experiments on lawrencium to learn more about its chemical properties. These experiments involved extractions with thenoyl trifluoroacetate, elutions from cation exchange resin columns with ammonium alpha-hydroxyisobutyrate, and reverse-phase chromatography using hydrogen di(2-ethylhexyl) orthophosphoric acid to investigate the chemical properties of Lr. The results from the elutions gave information about the ionic radius of Lr(III) which was found to elute very close to Er. An attempt to reduce Lr(III) with hydroxylamine hydrochloride was unsuccessful.

Notes: Abstract Samples of the long-lived fission product99Tc were isolated from liter quantities of selected groundwaters from the Cheshire, Bilby, Nash, Bourbon, Cambric and Faultless event sites and the99Tc concentrations determined by liquid scintillation counting. Although99Tc was detected in several of the samples, the concentrations did not exceed the MPCw of 3·10−4 μCi/ml and the results indicated that the Tc was present primarily in solution rather than sorbed on colloidal-size material.
