Notes: Abstract Peridotite and infolded marble of the Seiad ultramafic complex were recrystallized in the upper amphibolite facies as part of the regional progressive metamorphism of the Rattlesnake Creek terrane. Field relations, including the occurrence of metarodingites, and metasomatic zones between dissimilar rock types, demonstrate that the metasediments and serpentinized ultramafic rocks were juxtaposed prior to regional, barrovian metamorphism. Temperatures are estimated to have reached 760–800°C at pressures of 7–8 kbar during the peak of metamorphism. Four low-variance parageneses have been identified within a small (3 km2) area of the complex, which may reasonably be assumed to have formed under the same P and T conditions. Isobaric T-Xco2 diagrams of appropriate equilibria are presented for three different internally consistent sets of thermodynamic data. Despite the seemingly small numerical differences between the standard state thermodynamic properties of the data sets, only one diagram allows the four observed assemblages to coexist within a reasonable temperature range. All three phase diagrams require differences in fluid composition on the scale of a thin section; strong evidence for effective control of pore fluid composition by local mineral reactions during metamorphism.

Notes: High-speed lithium pellets have been injected into Alcator C tokamak plasmas in order to measure the internal magnetic field, and thus current density profiles. In the pellet ablation cloud, intense visible line radiation from the Li+ ion (λ≈5485 A(ring), 1s2s 3S−1s2p 3P) is polarized due to the Zeeman effect, and measurement of the polarization angle yields the direction of the total local magnetic field. A "snap shot'' of the q profile is obtained as the pellet penetrates from the edge into the center of the discharge, in a time of about 300 μs. The spatial resolution of the measurement is about 1 cm. At a toroidal field of BT=10 T, the emission in the unshifted π component of the Zeeman triplet is more than 80% polarized, and q profiles have been obtained. The pellets are perturbative (〈Δne〉/〈ne〉≈1), but the total pellet penetration time is at least a factor of 1000 smaller than the classical skin time. It can thus be anticipated that the current density profile should not be perturbed significantly during the time of the measurement. With some relatively straightforward modifications and refinements, precision approaching 10% for the measurement of q profiles should be achievable. The technique appears viable, using Li, as long as the toroidal field is (approximately-greater-than)4 T.

Notes: Line ratios of certain transitions in H- and He-like Ar are quite sensitive to electron temperature. In particular, the 1s2–1s4p transition in Ar16+ (λ=3.200 A(ring)) lies very close to the 1s–3p transition in Ar17+ (λ=3.151 A(ring)). The intensity ratio of these two lines is a sensitive function of electron temperature, through the changing ionization balance, at least over the range 1200 eV〈Te〈2500 eV. This has been exploited with a compact, high-resolution x-ray spectrometer to obtain time histories of central electron temperature in Alcator C tokamak plasmas. Time resolution of 20 ms has been achieved.

Notes: The TFTR vertical x-ray crystal spectrometer has now been operating with three crystals and position-sensitive detectors according to the original design specifications. The observed spectra of heliumlike Ti xxi, Cr xxiii, Fe xxv, and Ni xxvii have permitted a detailed comparison with the predictions from atomic theories, and they have provided data on the radial profiles of the ion temperature and toroidal rotation velocity, as well as the radial ion charge-state distribution in TFTR discharges. Central ion temperatures of 20 keV and central plasma rotation velocities of 5×105 m/s have been recorded from plasmas with auxiliary neutral beam heating. These experimental results are presented. Also discussed are further instrumental improvements, such as the installation of two additional crystals and detectors and the installation of γ and neutron shielding, which will make it possible to measure under full DD and DT operation with 27 MW of neutral beam injection where neutron production rates of 1019 neutrons/s are expected.

Notes: A synchronous time-of-flight (TOF) technique is employed to make velocity distribution measurements in pulsed supersonic free-jet expansions. For helium expansions, the flow attains a steady–state condition with a terminal Mach number of 80, on a 50-μs time scale. The transient behavior is primarily due to the mechanical action of the valve. For a 650-μs-wide pulse, greater than 95% of the atoms issuing from the pulsed nozzle can be described by the steady-state parameters. However, the velocity dispersion increases at both the leading and trailing edges of the pulse. This dispersion can be quantitatively described by incorporating a time-dependent Mach number into the standard steady-state flux velocity distribution function.

Notes: The TFTR horizontal x-ray crystal spectrometer has been improved by installation of γ and neutron shielding and is now operating in the TFTR Test Cell up to the presently maximum neutron production rates of 2×1016 neutrons/s. Further optimization by using a modified detector may assure operation of the spectrometer during the DT phase when TFTR is covered by an igloo. The instrument is set up for simultaneous observation of the entire satellite spectrum of Ni xxvii, and it provides data on the time evolution of the central ion temperature and the central plasma rotation velocity. Ion temperatures of 20–30 keV have been measured under "supershot'' conditions. The highest rotation velocity observed with unidirectional injection was 1.1×106 m/s.
