Notes: Abstract: Published experiments both support and contradict the hypothesis that nerve growth factor (NGF) can regulate adenylate cyclase activity. Using a sensitive assay that measures the conversion of [2-3H]adenine to [3H]cyclic AMP, we have shown that NGF alone cannot measurably stimulate cyclic AMP production, whereas the adenosine analog phenylisopropyladenosine (PIA) stimulates adenylate cyclase 20-fold over basal activity. NGF potentiates the capacity of both PIA and cholera toxin to stimulate cyclic AMP accumulation at all concentrations tested. This potentiation occurs at the earliest measurable times and does not require RNA synthesis. Therefore, we conclude that cyclase activation alone does not account for the effect of NGF on cyclic AMP accumulation and we discuss possible mechanisms.

Notes: Electron energy distribution on the drain edge of a channel in a GaAs nongated vertical field-effect transistor with hot-electron injection has been probed using hot-electron spectroscopy as a function of current density up to about 105 A/cm2. Electrons rapidly accelerated in an n+-i-p+-i-n+ planar-doped barrier source exhibit nonequilibrium transport through a thin channel (130 nm) with deceleration due to scattering and acceleration due to the electric field. The resulting hot-electron energy distribution, determined by using a planar-doped barrier as an analyzer, diverges from the steady-state one. This divergence dramatically increases with increasing the current density.

Notes: [Auszug] Scrapie is a slowly progressive spongiform encephalopathy of sheep and goats2 which can be transmitted to a variety of animal species including mice, hamsters and mink3. The pathology of scrapie is similar to certain devastating dementias of humans such as kuru, Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease and ...

Notes: Summary The authors have studied the microvascularization of the intracranial dura mater by microradiographic and histologic examination of 73 injected anatomic specimens. There exists a very abundant superficial arterial plexus which also serves to supply the inner table of the cranial vault. This plexus is continuous, even at the walls of the venous sinuses and the dural septa. The arteries are for the most part tortuous. The veins may be satellites of the arteries or, on the contrary, from a plexiform network passing through crevices in the interior of the dural layer. The walls of these veins consist only of an endothelium to be seen within the fibrous layer of the dura. Often, the arteries compress the venous lumen; this dangerous situation probably explains the frequent occurrence of arteriovenous fistulae of the dura mater, known by the name of dural fistulae.

Notes: Abstract A detailed evaluation of past wetland restoration projects in San Francisco Bay was undertaken to determine their present status and degree of success. Many of the projects never reached the level of success purported and others have been plagued by serious problems. On the basis of these findings, it is debatable whether any sites in San Francisco Bay can be described as completed, active, or successful restoration projects at present. In spite of these limited accomplishments, wetland creation and restoration have been adopted in the coastal permit process as mitigation to offset environmental damage or loss of habitat. However, because the technology is still largely experimental, there is no guarantee that man-made wetlands will persist as permanent substitutes for sacrificed natural habitats. Existing permit policies should be reanalyzed to insure that they actually succeed in safeguarding diminishing wetlands resources rather than bartering them away for questionable habitat substitutes. Coastal managers must be more specific about project requirements and goals before approval is granted. Continued research on a regional basis is needed to advance marsh establishment techniques into a proven technology. In the meantime, policies encouraging or allowing quid pro quo exchanges of natural wetlands with man-made replacements should proceed with caution. The technology and management policies used at present are many steps ahead of the needed supporting documentation.
