Notes: We have investigated characteristics of polycrystalline diamond thin films formed by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition method on silicon substrates using Raman spectroscopy, analytical and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy techniques. Grains with average size 1 μm in diameter were observed in these films. The Raman spectra from these films contain the strongest peak at 1335 cm−1, providing the characteristic signature for sp3 (diamond) bonding. The broad peak centered around 1550 cm−1 is believed to be due to some graphitic bonding. From detailed high-resolution images and microdiffraction, films were characterized to be cubic diamond with a lattice parameter of 3.56 A(ring). Diamond crystallites with fivefold external morphologies were also observed. The large crystallites in the films exhibited preferential texture in 〈011〉 type orientations. These crystallites were found to be twinned in {111} planes. The large 〈011〉 crystallites exhibited matching in {111} or {200} lattice planes of diamond with {022} planes of silicon. This is in agreement with our previous work on the growth of Ni on MgO, which showed that textured growth can occur by matching a set of lattice planes in the absence of matching of lattice constants.

Notes: Extraskeletal Ewing's sarcoma has been recognized as being histologically indistinguishable from Ewing's sarcoma of bone. Although the occurrence of extraosseous Ewing's sarcoma in deep soft tissues has been well described, such cutaneous lesions arc rare. We report the clinical history, histopathologic findings, and results of ultrastructural study of this rare variant occurring in a 12-year-old girl. She presented with a dermal and subcutaneous tumor of the left third toe, without osseous involvement. The lesion was composed of masses of round-oval cells, with perilobular fibrosis, focal hemorrhage, ill-defined pale cytoplasm containing glycogen, and absent pericellular reticulin. Ultrastructural study showed a monotonous cell population, with focal thickening of apposing membranes, high nuclear/cytoplasmic ratio, copious intracytoplasmic glycogen, and paucity of organ cells except mitochondria. We present this case along with discussion of the literature and problems concerning differential diagnosis of small cell malignancies in the skin.

Notes: Abstract The literature is reviewed with respect to several thermal loading situations and their influence on the temperature field in teeth. Breathing, food consumption, and dental treatment are processes disturbing the thermal balance in the oral cavity. The tooth temperature will be affected. These thermal changes result in a physical after-effect on enamel, dentin, and restorative materials, as well as in a histological change of the pulp tissue. Postoperative discomfort is another after-effect reported as a result of dental treatment. Recommendations concerning cooling technique and the use of a cement base are given to avoid this discomfort. In the literature reviewed, attention is mainly focused on temperature within teeth. However, the underlying thermal processes are important in the reported after-effects. It is concluded that more attention should be paid to this phenomenon in future research.

Notes: We present a 73-year-old man with a 5-year history of dermatitis herpetiformis who developed lesions with the clinical, histologic, and immunologic features of bullous pemphigoid. Direct immunoflurescence testing of a skin biopsy demonstrated both granular deposition of IgA, predominantly in the papillary bodies, and linear deposition of IgG and C3 at the basement membrane zone. This mixed direct immunofluorescence pattern, typical for dermatitis herpetiformis in the type of IgA deposits, but also typical for pemphigoid in the linear localization of IgG and C3, is unusual. This case emphasizes that even after a specific diagnosis has been established, if the clinical morphology or response to therapy changes, repeat histologic and immunofluorescence studies may be indicated in diagnosis and management of patients with bullous disease.

Notes: The homogeneous linear deposition of IgA along the basement membrane zone of uninvolved skin is a distinguishing feature of linear IgA dermatosis in adults and chronic bullous dermatosis of childhood. Although linear IgA deposition may be seen in other cutaneous diseases, to our knowledge, there are no previous reports of a direct association with cutaneous infection. We describe the finding of intense fluorescence, in a linear pattern, of IgA at the basement membrane zone in an elderly man with disseminated cutaneous varicella-zoster infection.

Notes: A controlled clinical study, containing 720 posterior amalgam restorations placed in a group of 103 adult patients by three dentists, was used for examination of the influences on the incidence of occlusal and approximal bulk fractures. These fractures were evaluated from black and white photographs, taken annually, of the occlusal surface of the restorations over a 5-year period, using a three point photorating scale for both fracture sites. The influence of the dentist as well as the influence of the alloy and tooth type were statistically analysed. The results of these analyses demonstrated that the dentist, as well as the alloy and tooth type, have a statistically significant influence on the incidence of bulk fracture of amalgam restorations.

Notes: Recent reports have described the development of skeletal abnormalities in patients treated with etretinate (Tigason®). We have therefore examined 19 children and adolescents who have been continuously treated with etretinate for several years (median duration of treatment 5 years). Their overall mean daily dose ranged from 0·4 to 1 mg/kg (median 0·8 mg/kg).All subjects received musculoskeletal assessment and a 99mtechnetium methylene diphosphonate (99mTc MDP) whole body bone scan, which results in a lower total radiation dose than a skeletal survey, and is more sensitive. Bone scans identify sites of abnormal turnover of bone earlier than plain radiographs, and are valuable in the early assessment of abnormalities of the growth plate, provided high resolution collimation is used. These studies revealed no evidence of significant bony abnormality in any patient. We therefore believe that long-term etretinate therapy can probably be given with a low risk of musculoskeletal toxicity if certain precautions are taken, particularly use of low doses, early investigation of musculoskeletal symptoms and regular 99mTc MDP bone scans.

Notes: Summary The Squall Lines are the most important convective systems of the West African Sahel region yielding precipitation during the summer months mainly from June to September. The composite method is used to show the average structure of the continental Squall Lines observed during the WA-MEX period July 1979. Composite fields of flow and moisture are produced of the areas within the Squall Lines as well as of their environment to show the coupling between both the Squall Lines and the larger scales features such as the African Easterly Jet, the Easterly Waves and the Monsoon Front. The Squall Lines are preferably situated west of the Easterly Wave trough whereas the area east of the trough mostly is Squall Line free. Here the northward directed water vapour flux into the Sahel region is enhanced. Furthermore, north-ward moisture transport occurs north of the Squall Lines. The water vapour of both fluxes from the south as well as the water vapours available from intensive local evaporation in the Squall Line free space are then incorporated in the subsequent Squall Lines and thus provide the Sahel région with the essential rains.

Notes: Summary Composites of synoptic reports and wind observations in a coordinate system moving with the squall lines over the WAMEX area in June 1979 allow us to show the average structure of the airflow, the moisture and temperature fields in the synoptic scale environment of West African continental squall lines. The monsoon front, the African Easterly Jet, the easterly waves, and the squall lines interact and produce the observed air flow patterns. The results of the composite enalysis reveal a northward surge of the monsoonal air masses in the rear of the squall lines thus providing favorable conditions for the generation of new squall lines.

Notes: Abstract Nine of 56 patients with mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) showed small tracheal diameters on their frontal chest radiographs. Autopsy of an MPS I-H (Hurler disease) patient demonstrated that the small calibre was secondary to deposition of glycosaminoglycan (mucopolysaccharide). Autopsies of two patients with other storage diseases, one with geleophysic dysplasia and one with mucolipidosis II, also exhibited compromise of their airways because of storage material accumulation.
