Notes: Abstract: The involvement of the γ-aminobutyric acidA(GABAA) receptor complex in the pathogenesis of hepatic encephalopathy was examined in thioacetamide-treated rats with fulminant hepatic failure. Partially purified extracts from encephalopathic rat brain were approximately three times more potent in inhibiting [3H]Ro 15-1788 binding to benzodiazepine receptors than identically prepared extracts from control rats. High levels of inhibitory activity were also found in extracts of plasma, heart, and liver from thioacetamide-treated rats. The inhibition of [3H]Ro 15-1788 binding by brain extracts appeared to be competitive and reversible and was unaffected by treatment with either proteolytic enzymes or boiling. Further, GABA significantly enhanced the potency of these extracts in inhibiting [3H]flunitrazepam binding. In contrast, no differences were found in radioligand binding to the constituent recognition sites of the GABAA receptor complex in well-washed brain membranes prepared from control and encephalopathic animals. These findings suggest that the recognition-site qualities of the constituent proteins of the GABAA receptor complex are unchanged in an experimental model of hepatic encephalopathy. However, significant elevations in the level of a substance or substances with neurochemical properties characteristic of a benzodiazepine receptor agonist may contribute to the electrophysiological and behavioral manifestations of hepatic encephalopathy.

Notes: Productivity, seasonal growth and persistence of 10 perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) varieties were assessed al an upland (305 m) and lowland (30 m) site in mid-Wales. Averaged over 3 harvest years (1979–81), mean dry matter (DM) production at 8.8 t ha−1 was 22% lower in the upland environment, with spring (April and May) growth showing greatest contrast varying from only 6% of that in the lowland in 1979, after a severe winter, to 113% in 1981.Relative ranking of varieties differed considerably between the two environments and no correlation was found between DM production at the two sites (r= 0.5945). Early heading varieties performed better in the spring than late types at the upland site. A comparison of the results with those published from official variety testing trials gave a positive relationship under lowland conditions (r= 0.7162*) but no correlation with those from the upland centre (r= 0.1969).The findings of the study show that relative productivity of varieties, but not persistency, differs between upland and lowland environments.

Notes: A field investigation into the effect of slurry seeding on the dry-matter yield and persistence of an Italian ryegrass sward was assessed over a 3-year period (1984–86) under a regime of three cuts per season combined with sheep grazing in early spring and late autumn. Results showed that slurry plus seed treatments produced up to 30% more herbage dry matter and a significantly higher tiller density than where no slurry or seed were used. Slurry application with and without seed also reduced the proportion of weed grasses (mainly Poa spp.) in the sward. It is concluded that slurry seeding is a useful technique for extending the productive life of an Italian ryegrass sward.

Notes: The effect of management on dry matter yield and persistence of eight cultivars was assessed over a 3-year period (1978–80) under integration of sheep grazing and simulated sheep grazing with cutting for conservation, and the two cutting frequencies used in the National List trials. A high correlation was obtained in the first and second harvest years between managements in respect of annual production, the ranking order of yield being similar for the range of cultivars. In the third harvest year yield correlation and persistence between sheep grazing and simulated sheep grazing was high and similar to previous years, but all other yield and persistence correlations were considerably reduced. A major effect of frequent cutting management used in the National List trials was the increase in the proportion of unsown grasses (mainly Poa spp.) in the swards.

Notes: Cyclotron resonance of the two-dimensional hole gas (2DHG) in the strained-layer quantum well structure of In0.20Ga0.80As/GaAs is observed in far-infrared transmission measurements made at 4.2 K. The cyclotron mass of the 2DHG in the In0.20Ga0.80As channel is (0.191±0.008)me for a 2D hole density p2D =8.5×1011/cm2.

Notes: Simultaneous measurement of both the conduction- and valence-band dispersion curves in single strained-layer structures is presented. These measurements rely on the application of recent observations regarding breaking of the usual selection rules for interband magnetoluminescence transitions in modulation-doped structures. Low-temperature magneto-luminescence data for three representative InGaAs/GaAs n-type single-strained quantum well structures are presented. For energies approaching 50 meV above the band gap, we find that the conduction band is parabolic with an effective mass of 0.071m0. Over the same energy range, the valence bands are highly nonparabolic.

Notes: The RADLAC-II accelerator foilless diode injector was operated under double-pulse conditions utilizing the RIIM accelerator as the test bed [M. G. Mazarakis, D. L. Smith, R. B. Miller, R. S. Clark, D. E. Hasti, D. L. Johnson, J. W. Poukey, K. R. Prestwich, and S. L. Shope, IEEE Trans. Nucl. Sci. NS-32, 3237 (1985)]. The original RIIM accelerator pulsed-power network was modified to provide for the generation, transmission, and delivery to the foilless diode of two distinct multimegavolt pulses with variable interpulse separation from 0 to 2 ms. The foilless diode successfully produced two 10-kA current pulses with interpulse separations up to 1 μs. For larger separations, the generated plasma and an excessive neutral gas release following the first pulse prevented the diode from producing a second current pulse.

Notes: Strained GaAs/InGaAs/AlGaAs quantum-well structures grown on GaAs have been removed from their original substrates by a lift-off process and bonded directly to glass or SiO2-coated Si substrates. Both undoped and modulation-doped structures have been characterized before and after transfer by Hall measurements, variable temperature x-ray diffraction, and photoluminescence. The bonded structures retain the high quality of the as-grown layers.
