Notes: Bi(-Pb)-Sr-Ca-Cu-O thin films were prepared on MgO(100) single-crystal substrates by electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) plasma sputtering at substrate temperatures from room temperature to 590 °C. Pb-doped superconducting as-grown films were obtained above 560 °C. The Tc values of the Pb-doped films prepared at 570–590 °C were 58–64 K which increased with increasing substrate temperature. Pb-undoped as-grown films obtained at 590 °C showed superconduction (Tc =30 K), but the films obtained below 580 °C were semiconductors. The grain sizes and contents of the 37 A(ring) phase (110 K phase) were increased by the Pb doping into the as-grown Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O films.

Notes: The dynamical properties of the magneto-optical effects of magnetic fluids thin films were investigated. The thin films, 12 μm thick, of magnetite colloidal particles in water solvents and alkylnaphthalene one were prepared. A pulsed magnetic field H(t) was generated in a single turn coil by discharging a 40-kV capacitor bank. The intensity I(t) of the transmitted light through the two crossed polarizers and the films located in the coil was measured. The relaxation process of the magneto-optical effect can be described in terms of a single relaxation time, τ=3 μs, for a water-based magnetic fluid, while the relaxation time constant for alkylnaphthalene one depends on the field strength. These dynamical properties can be interpreted by the time-dependent Ginzburg–Landau theory by introducing the order parameter of the colloidal particles.

Notes: A four-segmented longitudinal discharge low pressure N2 laser (337 nm) is reported in which automatic spark preionization and an LC inversion-charge transfer excitation circuit are employed. Its laser output power was nearly doubled when the techniques developed here were used. The characteristics of the peak laser output powers are interpreted qualitatively, with the electron densities calculated from the observed discharge voltages and currents.

Notes: A new method for pattern reduction in the x-ray region is proposed. In its principle was used the asymmetric Bragg reflection giving the different beamwidth in the reflected beam from the incident one. Light from an undulator line (BL-2) at the Photon Factory was used to obtain highly spatially resolved replication in reasonably short exposure time. Performed was one-dimensional demagnification of a pattern with a ratio of 1/4 in the following condition: Si 111 reflection was used where the offset angle α from the surface is 22° and the wavelength λ was 3.5 λ, which is available from the 7th harmonic of the undulator radiation. The submicron scale resist pattern was resolved.

Notes: A contactless method is developed for high-sensitivity magnetoresistance measurement in pulsed high fields. The resistivity is measured by observing transmission of a radio-frequency field through a thin specimen. The transmission rate is analytically given as a function of the resistivity within the classical skin-effect regime. By use of a high-frequency (0.1–100 MHz), electrical noise coming from pulsed magnetic fields can be rejected effectively and the sensitivity of the measurement is improved by at least a factor of 100 compared with that of a conventional dc four-terminal method. The present method is available for the measurements on superconductors, magnetic metals, and any other materials with short collision time in high magnetic fields. Upper critical fields and magnetoresistance of recent high Tc superconductors Y-Ba-Cu-O are measured up to 40 T.

Notes: The compounds FexNiGe have the Ni2In-type crystal structure in the nonstoichiometric composition range of 0.5(approximately-less-than)x(approximately-less-than)0.9. With decreasing temperature, the magnetization of these compounds shows a broad maximum first and then decreases abruptly at a critical temperature Tf which varies with x from 5 K for x=0.5 to 17 K for x=0.9. Spin-glass-like freezing is considered to occur at Tf. The Mössbauer spectra observed below Tf show a symmetric pattern and exhibit a wide distribution of hyperfine fields. The symmetric pattern of the spectra is attributable to the freezing of iron moments in random directions. The Mössbauer linewidth decreases sharply with increasing temperature near Tf. This fact would mean that the relaxation time of the magnetic moments strongly depends on temperature and exceeds the nucleus Larmor period below Tf. The long relaxation time of the magnetic moments may be due to the formation of magnetic clusters.

Notes: Summary The ultrastructural features of early events in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection of HTLV-I-carrying MT-2 lymphocytes were investigated by electron microscopy. Within 10 min after virus inoculation at 37°C, the virus entered the cell in two ways; (1) the virus attached to the lymphocyte membrane and the viral core entered the cell after fusion of the viral envelope with the cell membrane, and (2) part of the cell membrane to which the virus was attached became invaginated, the virus became trapped in a phagosome and the viral core entered after the fusion of viral membrane with the vacuolar membrane. Thereafter, some cells were observed to form syncytia with multiple nuclei. When the proportion of anti-HIV antibody-reactive cells present exceeded 90%, virus production was strongly activated, and budding on the cell membrane was frequently observed.
