Notes: The application of a plasma focus (PF) device operated at 1 kJ and 25 kV as a pulsed ion implanter is described. Samples of AISI 304 stainless steel implanted with nitrogen with this device show a reduction of wear of 42 times with respect to the implanted ones, with a reduction, at the same time of the friction coefficient. X-ray diffraction and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses of nitrided samples show the Fe2N precipitate formation, in an almost homogeneous ∼0.4-μm-thick superficial layer. The feasibility of the use of the PF as an implanter arises from these results as well as the possibility of designing and constructing similar systems that could perform the whole process (e.g., nitriding) in short time intervals (∼10 s).

Notes: The effect of granularity in powder X-ray diffraction is reviewed, and the shortcomings of previously developed models in explaining this effect are described. A new physical model encompassing all aspects of this phenomenon is proposed. Mathematical formulae based on the model are derived, and their limit cases are discussed. Values of the theoretical intensities from the model are compared with results from a specially designed experiment.

Notes: Present methods for quantitative X-ray phase analysis make extensive use of multilinear regression. Practical application of these methods compels workers to make a choice among many different sets of experimental conditions such as the number, identity and relative concentration of the phases in the synthetic mixtures used for the solution of the regression problem; the number and extent of the angular regions within which X-ray intensities are to be measured; and so on. There are as yet no general criteria for this selection, and classical statistical experimental methods, even such effective ones as SIMPLEX, are very time consuming. In the present work a Monte Carlo method is proposed for optimization of the reproducibility and detection limit for a completely general quantitative X-ray phase analysis. A system of three computer programs to this end is developed and applied to X-ray phase analysis of laterites, illustrating the choice of a set of performing conditions among 20 of them.

Notes: Summary It is well known that carbonic anhydrase plays an important role in the physiological responses of carotidbody chemoreceptors to hypercapnia. Nevertheless the precise location of the enzyme within the carotid body has been a matter of controversy for many years. Using the Hansson method we found histochemical evidence that this enzyme is localized in type I cells. Type II cells and nerve terminals did not show enzymatic activity. These results allow us to define the carotid body as a secondary receptor in the context of the “acidic hypothesis” of transduction in the carotid body.

Notes: Summary The yield stability of some CIMMYT tropical maize (Zea mays L.) populations of early and intermediate maturity, measured by the performance of varieties derived from them, was determined. Results of the stability analyses, conducted over international environments from 1980 to 1983, indicated that selections from Mezcla Amarilla exhibited good stability in high yielding sites. Varieties derived from Antigua-Republica Dominicana tended to be more stable in unfavourable environments, whereas selections from Blanco Cristalino-1 and Blanco Dentado-2 were stable in both low and high production sites. The combination of enviromental factors in the specific test locations, namely Poza Rica (Mexico), Tocumen (Panama), Islamabad (Pakistan), and Ferkessedougou (Ivory Coast), allowed selection of varieties that are very stable in other regions of the world. The varieties formed on the basis of multilocational data do not seem to be any more stable than those formed using data from a single location.

Notes: Abstract The paper presents an application of thermodielectrical analysis in a geological material of industrial interest (bentonites). Thermodielectrical curves show noticeable differences in dependence of the cationic content and chemical nature of the cations, and also, with the cation position in the lattice.

Notes: Summary Principal coordinates analysis was used to determine the yield stability of some CIMMYT maize populations (Zea mays L.) measured by the performance of the varieties selected from them. The varieties included in this study were derived from subtropical of early and intermediate maturity maize populations. The analyses included grain yield data from international trials conducted from 1979 to 1983. Results show that varieties selected from the population Blanco Subtropical were stable in low yielding sites. Of the populations considered in this study, Amarillo Bajio and ETO-Illinois produced a greater number of varieties that give stable yields under both favourable and unfavourable environmental conditions. Some selections based on multilocational data showed good stability across years in both low and high yielding sites; however, across location varieties were not always more stable than specific site selections. Varieties formed in Tlaltizapan (Mexico), and Chuquisaca (Bolivia) were very stable in other regions.

Notes: Summary YoungPinus radiata D. Don were fertilized with copper oxychloride and copper sulfate on a random block basis with four replicates. Roots, needles, stems and shoot apices were analyzed separately for Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn contents at different times from fertilization. The results showed a rapid plant copper absorption, no effects being found on the Fe, Mn and Zn content. The dynamic internal distribution of copper among different plant parts is shown. The treatments applied did not cause any phenotypical alteration nor phytotoxicity in the plants, and no significant effect of the fertilizer chemicals on each other.

Notes: Summary Eighty-two equine sera from 13 farms in northern Colombia were examined for antibodies toBabesia caballi andB. equi using the complement fixation (CF) and the indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) test. Seroreactors to both piroplasms were present on all farms. The IFA test indicated a prevalence of 90% forB. caballi and 94% forB. equi. The CF test detected antibodies toB. caballi in 41% and toB. equi in 65% of the animals. The prevalence of seroreactors in different age groups revealed a significant decline in CF antibodies toB. caballi in animals older than three years. IFA titres for bothBabesia spp. gradually declined with increasing age of the animals but were still present in most animals of the oldest age group (over nine years old).Anocentor nitens was found on all farms whereasAmblyomma cajennense was found only on two farms located on the coast.
