A mathematical model of the liquid-membrane coupling response of the submersible electrostatic acoustic transducer (ESAT) [Rev. Sci. Instrum. 50, 31 (1979)] is presented. The model predicts that the ESAT responds to an incident ultrasonic wave of frequency ω and a constant displacement amplitude ξ0 with an output that is proportional to 2ξ0[1+(σω/Z)2]−1/2, where σ is the membrane areal density and Z is the acoustic impedance of the immersion fluid. Measurements taken over the frequency range from 1 to 11 MHz are in good agreement with the model.
