Abstract:
The mining village of Brandes-en-Oisans sprang up at high altitude (between 1800 and 2700 meters) during the XIIIth and XIVth centuries, around a lead and silver mining development. The fîeld survey led to the discovery of the miners' housing and traces of their way of life in the middle of an exceptionally inhospitable environment. What is left of their activity (metallurgical waste, workshops, hydraulic equipments) proves they tried to exploit a precious metal rationally.
