    In: Bragantia, FapUNIFESP (SciELO), Vol. 47, No. 1 ( 1988), p. 25-41
Abstract: Twenty three Mexican inbred lines and the cultivars IAC-24 and Anahuac were evaluated in field experiments carried out at Monte Alegre do Sul and Tatuí Experimental Stations and at Maracaí during the period of 1984 to 1986. Grain yield, number of days from emergence to flowering and from emergence to maturation, plant height, percentage of layed plants, head length, number of grains per spike and spikelet, number of spikelets per spike, resistance to stem and leaf rust were evaluated under field (adult plants) and greenhouse conditions (seedling stage). Tolerance to Al toxicity was evaluated in laboratory using nutrient solutions. The lines IAC-215, IAC-216, IAC-217, and IAC-219 showed high grain yield but they did not differ from the check cultivars. In relation to stem and leaf rusts the lines Festiguay-Tecolote 363.30.6.1 x Ciguena, and [4777² x (Frontana/Kenya 58//Newthatch)] Gabo/Pavon-76 (T-12 and T-13) showed resistance to nine races of stem rust and to six races of leaf rust. The genotypes IAC-215, IAC-216, Yaco"S", IAC-218, Dougga-Bluejay (T-4), Buckbuck"S"-Bulbul"S" presented early plants; IAC-215, Yaco"S" and Jupateco 73-Bluejay showed short plants; Bonanza-Yecora F-70/Florence 35.70 exhibited long heads, with large number of spikelets and grains per spike; Jupateco 73-Bluejay had high head fertility and [(IAS-58-IAS-55 x Alondra"S"/IAC-5) Alondra"S" - IAS-58 103A x Alondra"S" ] , IAC-215, IAC-216, IAC-219 and IAC-24 were the most tolerant material to 10 mg/liter of Al3+. These genotypes would be of great value as genetic sources of this characters in a breeding program for the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil.

    In: Bragantia, FapUNIFESP (SciELO), Vol. 47, No. 2 ( 1988), p. 195-211
Abstract: Twenty three inbred lines obtained at the Instituto Agronômico from the wheat breeding program plus the cultivars BH-1146 and Alondra-S-46 were evaluated in field experiments carried out at Campinas, Capão Bonito and Tatuí Experimental Stations, and at two farms located in Paranapanema Valley, during the period 1984-86. Grain yield, plant height, number of days from emergence to flowering and from emergence to maturation, percentage of lodged plants, head length, number of grains per spike and spikelet, number of spikelets per spike, weight of 100 grains, and resistance to stem and leaf rust were evaluated under field conditions; tests of resistance to stem and leaf rusts and to aluminum were also made, respectively, in greenhouse and in laboratory. The lines 12, 15 and 18 and the cultivars BH-1146 presented good productivity considering the mean of the nine experiments, showing significant differences from the cultivars Alondra-S-46. In relation to stem rust, Alondra-S-46' presented at seedling stage, resistance to the six races and the lines 9 and 11 showed resistance to five and four races, respectively. The lines 2, 3, 6, 10, 11 and 16 and 'Alondra-S-46' under field conditions were the most resistant to stem rust. The lines 2 (IAC-172) and 20 and the cultivars BH-1146 presented low levels of the leaf rust in natural infection out in the field. The lines 3 (IAC-231), 8, 9, 20,21 and 22 and the cultivars Alondra-S-46 showed semi-dwarf type when compared to the tall cultivars BH-1146. The line 20 was considered as a genetic source to increase the head length and the number of grains per spike and per spikelet. The lines 1, 3, 4, 12, 17, 18 and 19 and the 'BH-1146' were tolerant to the presence of 10 mg/liter of Al3+ in the nutrient solution.

Grain yield, plant height, number of days from emergence to flowering and from emergence to maturation, percentage of lodged plants, head length, number of grain per spike and per spikelet, number of spikelets, weight of 100 grains, and resistance to stem and leaf rusts, to Helminthosporium sp. and to powdery mildew were evaluated under field conditions. Tests of resistance to stem and leaf rusts and to aluminum tolerance, were made in greenhouse and laboratory, respectively. At Capão Bonito and Paranapanema Valley the cultivars BH-1146 and the line 12 showed good grain yield in upland conditions. The tines 4, 9 and 13 at Campinas and the line 8 at Tatuí presented good productivity under sprinkler irrigation. The cultivars BH-1146 and the lines 13, 20 and 14 exhibited the highest grain yield considering the average of the nine experiments. The lines 2, 7, 8,17 and 18 and the cultivars Alondra-S-46 exhibited semidwarf type when compared to the tall cultivars BH-1 146 and IAC-5. In relation to stem rust, the lines 7 and 8 and the cultivars Alondra-S-46 showed resistance at seedling stage to the six races and the lines 17 and 18 were resistant to five races, under greenhouse conditions. The lines 1, 2, 7, 8, 12 and 17, plus the cultivars Alondra-S-46 presented resistance to stem rust under field conditions. The lines 1, 5, 8 and 18 exhibited low levels of leaf rust under natural infection out in the field. The lines 11, 12, 13, 19, 20 and 21 as well as 'BH-1146' were tolerant to the presence of 10mg/liter of Al3+ in the nutrient solution.

Abstract: Twenty three inbred lines obtained at the Instituto Agronômico from the wheat breeding program plus the cultivars BH-1146 and Alondra-S-46 were evaluated in field experiments carried out at Campinas Experiment Center, Capão Bonito and Tietê Experiment Stations, and at two farms located in the Paranapanema Valley, during the period 1984-86. Grain yield, plant height, number of days from emergence to flowering and from emergence to maturation, percentage of lodged plants, head length, number of grain per spike and per spikelet, number of spikelets per spike, weight of 100 grains, and resistance to stem and leaf rusts were evaluated under field conditions. The resistance to stem and leaf rusts was tested in the greenhouse, and tolerance to aluminum toxicity was tested in the laboratory. Considering the experiments carried out at Capão Bonito the line 19 presented good productivity showing moderate resistance to Helminthosporium sp. and high tolerance to aluminum toxicity. This line was early in maturity and exhibited tall type of plant but it was resistant to lodging. The cultivars BH-1146 and the line 16 showed high grain yield at the Paranapanema Valley. The line 16 presented a semidwarf type, early maturity, field resistance to leaf rust, resistance to lodging and tolerance to Al toxicity. At Tietê the line 16 showed high productivity. There were no differences among the lines at Campinas. The lines 1, 3, 9, 10, 11, 15, 16, 22, 23 and the cultivars Alondra-S-46 exhibited semidwarf type when compared to the tall cultivars BH-1146. The lines 9, 10, 11 and the cultivars Alondra-S-46 were resistant to stem rust, presenting at seedling stage, resistance to six races under greenhouse conditions. The lines 11, 16, 18 and the cultivars BH-1146 presented low levels of the leaf rust from natural infection out in the field. The line 7 with long heads, the lines 7 and 8 with large number of spikelets per spike, the line 2 presenting high head fertility and the line 21 exhibiting heavy grains were considered as good genetic sources of these characteristics for the wheat breeding program. The lines 1, 3, 5, 12, 13, 14, 16, 17, 18, 19, 21 and the cultivars BH-1146 were tolerant to the presence of 10 mg/liter of Al in the nutrient solution.

    In: Bragantia, FapUNIFESP (SciELO), Vol. 48, No. 2 ( 1989), p. 143-156
Abstract: Twenty four triticale inbred lines and the wheat cultivar IAC-21 were evaluated in field experiments carried out at different locations of the State of São Paulo, Brazil, during the years of 1986 and 1987. Grain yield, plant height, number of days from emergence to flowering, percentage of layed plants, weight of 100 grains, resistance to leaf rust (Puccinia graminis sp. tritici) and to leaf spots (Helminthosporium sp. and Septoria sp.) were evaluated under field conditions. The triticale inbred line Nutria 7272 pre-sented the best grain yield (3,098 kg/ha), showing differences from the IAC-21 (2,241 kg/ha) and the other triticales, except for the inbred lines Merino"S" - JLO"S" (T-20 and 21), Nutria 440 and Juanillo 159 presenting 2,891, 2,870, 2,805 and 2,645 kg/ha respectively. The triticales were more resistant to leaf rust than the wheat IAC-21. The line Panche 7287 was moderately resistant to leaf spots and the other germplasms suscetible to this disease. The lines M2A-KLA"S" x MA (T-6), Faro"S" and Panche 7287 were significantly later in relation to IAC-21. The triticales M2A-CML 360 x M2A (T-2), Turk DWF-V 127 x 6TA 204/IA 146, M2A-CML x IA, TCEP 77138, BGL"S"-IGA x PND"S" and BCM"S" - Addax"S" were shorter than 'IAC-21'. The triticale Juanillo 159 had heavier grains than 'IAC-21' and the other triticale inbred lines except for the lines Nutria 7272 and Merino"S" - JLO"S" = T-21.
