Abstract: The molecular alignment in chiral smectic I (SmI * ) phase with the bond orientational hexatic ordering in the layer has been studied by observing surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal cells of 8SI * under an optical polarizing microscope. With decreasing temperature from SmC * to SmI * , two twisted states change to two corresponding uniform states. Under an appropriate condition in SmI * , there appear four distinct states which are corresponding to the in-plane projection of the six sites of the hexagonal net. These four states are divided by two kinds of boundaries, which rotate the C-director by ±π/3 and ±π, respectively.

Abstract: The switching process in thin ferroelectric liquid crystal cells under low frequency triangular wave is studied. It is pointed out that there exist three switching processes which are classified into two kinds of boundary motions. One is attributed to an interior 2π disclination motion without changing surface molecular orientation, while the other to a reversion of C-directors on a top and bottom surface which may accompany a surface disclination motion. The field induced motion of a disclination loop separating two kinds of twisted states is discussed by taking into account a structural asymmetry of ±2 π wedge disclinations.

Abstract: The molecular alignment in smectic phases with hexagonal ordering has been studied by observing surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal cells of 8SI * and HxOBAMBC under an optical polarizing microscope. There findings are: (1) Continuous degeneracy in tilt direction is lifted and is replaced by the discrete one specified by azimuthal angles φ=0, ±π/3, ±2 π/3 and π. (2) One of the sides of hexagon is parallel (S J * ) or perpendicular (S G * ) to the bounding surfaces, so that the most stable molecular orientation is parallel to the cell surface in every phase. (3) The more the hexagonal ordering develops, the less stable the twisted states become.

Abstract: Dynamic process of molecular reorientation in SSFLC cells is studied under a triangular wave by observing a current due to a polarization realignment and by taking stroboscopic micrographs simultaneously. There appear two peaks in the current signal, which correspond to stroboscopic observations of a uniform color change and a spotted pattern, respectively. The first peak originates from both a surface and interior molecular reorientations associated with a transition from a uniform state to a twisted one. The second peak is attributed to a subsequent change to the other uniform state caused by a molecular reorientation at another surface.
