Abstract: An extension of the iterative k-space method [N. Bojarski, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 72, 570–584 (1982)] is used to calculate acoustic scattering. The conjugate gradient method, with guaranteed convergence, is used instead of the Neumann series for the iterative calculations. In order to accelerate the computation and reduce the memory-size requirement, the convolution type integral involved in the use of the conjugate gradient method is handled as in the k-space method. One-dimensional acoustic scattering by an arbitrary slab is calculated as a simple illustrative application of the formalism. In order to demonstrate the utility of the method, some of the calculated results are compared with those obtained by the Neumann method.
