Selection and design of separation processes using group contribution methods. Separation processes can be designed by solving so-called MESH equations. In spite of the large number of equations and unknowns, modern computers and numerical methods permit the rigorous solution of the resulting equations. The exactness of the design is influenced only by the accuracy of the K factors and enthalpy data used. Great progress has recently been made in the field of phase equilibrium thermodynamics. While 20 years ago, a great number of time consuming and expensive experiments were necessary to describe the real behaviour of multicomponent systems, today this behaviour can be predicted using binary information or group contribution methods.
