Notes: Abstract A simple, low cost, deep-towed system for high-resolution reflection seismic profiling is described. It consists of a vertical array with two hydrophones having a separation of 2.2 m and rigidly mounted onto streamlined tow bodies. Improvement of the signal-to-noise ratio is attained by simple stacking of the hydrophone outputs after signal conditioning and travel time corrections. The suppression of side echoes and surface reflections is achieved by an analog procedure which in effect improves the directional characteristics of the array. A circuit for automatic gain control is included to enhance weak signals as well as to suppress ringing. Results in Kiel Bay and over the crest of the Jan Mayen Ridge (northern Atlantic) suggest that this simple vertical array may supplement air gun systems better than conventional, surface pinger-type equipment.

Notes: Abstract The anisotropic layer compound FeOCl has been synthesized by two different techniques to give, respectively, a large single crystal blade-like product (SC) and a polycrystalline powder product (PC), each of which was examined by temperature dependent57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy over the range 4.2≤T≤300 K. In particular, the onset of magnetic ordering on sample cooling (near 90 K) has been studied in detail, in the light of the 2-dimensional ordering of the paramagnetic ion spins in the crystallographica, c plane. The high temperature (∼300 K) and low temperature (∼4.2 K) Mössbauer parameters for the SC and PC material are identical within experimental error. The persistence in the spectra of the paramagnetic doublet due to h.s. Fe(III) below the magnetic ordering temperature in the PC material is shown to be consistent with the superparamagnetism of small particles in those samples.

Notes: Abstract We have used temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility, Mössbauer and EXAFS measurements to study the high spin (HS) — low spin (LS) conversion in Fe(II) (bptn) (NCS)2, and we have combined consistently the information obtained from the different methods.

Notes: Summary A comparison of performance characteristics of a grinding and a punching technique is described. Both techniques are used to obtain a representative part of a filter and collected airborne dust for solid sampling direct Zeeman atomic absorption spectrometry. Both techniques showed the same mean results, whereas the precision of the grinding techniques was better. It was concluded that the grinding technique was preferable especially when filters with relatively thick layers of dust have to be analyzed. The grinding technique also allows analysis of all filter material as for one determination only 2 mg is needed and the mean filter weight is about 25 mg. This technique thus gives the possibility to determine more metals in one filter.

Notes: Abstract Temperature-dependent transmission Mössbauer spectroscopy was used to determine the Debye-Waller factors and hyperfine interaction parameters of the Fe(II) spin crossover complexes: Fe(phen)2(NCS)2, Fe(bipy)2(NCS)2 and Fe(py)2phen(NCS)2, and also the non-crossover system Fe(py)4(NCS)2. In the spin conversion systems, thef LS is higher than thef HS, which indicates different lattice dynamical properties at the metal sites in the1A1 and5T2 configurations, and is discussed in relation to the metal-ligand bonding interactions in the two spin states.
