Abstract: This paper presents a methodol ogy for performing database system simulations which is based on the Wisconsin Bench- marks. Use of this approach provides very realistic represen tations for transactions, hard ware, and software aspects of a target database environment. The flexibility built into the approach also facilitates exami nation of many different database environments with few changes to the basic model. The method described equips researchers with the first standard simulation approach which can be used on any database system. We describe the approach, its implementation using SLAM II, and then provide an overview of its use.

Abstract: Comparisons are presented between the characteristics of ground motions at five sites underlain by clay at which ground motions were recorded in Mexico City in the earthquake of September 16, 1985 and for which analyses of ground response have been made, based on the measured properties of soils and the motions recorded on hard formations at the National University of Mexico. It is shown that the ground response in areas of Mexico City underlain by clay is extremely sensitive to small changes in the shear wave velocity of the clay and it is suggested that a probabilistic approach which allows for uncertainties in shear wave velocity measurements and in the characteristics of the motions on the hard formations is desirable to assess these effects. Based on the results of such an approach it is concluded that simple ground response analyses can provide very useful data for engineering assessments of the effects of local soil conditions on the characteristics of ground motions likely to develop at sites underlain by soft clays, and that the use of these procedures also provides a useful basis for estimating the general nature of the ground motions in the extensive heavy damage zone of Mexico City in the 1985 earthquake.

Abstract: Static and dynamic behaviors of unsymmetric cross-ply laminates in cylindrical bending are investigated using von Karman large deflection theory. Due to the presence of bending- extension coupling, the effect of the large deflection term becomes pronounced even in the "small deflection" range. Further, the apparent laminate bending rigidity depends on the direction of deflection. It is also found that in free vibration at small amplitudes, large deflection theory may yield frequencies lower than linear theory.

Abstract: Two large-scale, long-term research projects to test the feasibility of using positive and non-coercive incentives to encourage having fewer children and spacing were carried out in Taiwan during the 1970s. The results of these long-term projects are presented. The Educational Savings Plan, begun in 1971, provided financing for the secondary school education of children whose parents had limited family size to no more than three children. The Spacing Incentive Plan, begun in 1975, encouraged prolonging the interval between first and second births to at least three years by providing free birth delivery of the second child. Although both were less successful than anticipated, much was learned about the social, economic, and practical difficulties of program implementation.

Abstract: Varicella myocarditis is an unusual complication of a common childhood disease. Two patients with life-threatening dysrhythmias and circulatory failure are reported. One patient required permanent pacemaker implantation for acquired complete heart block, not previously described with varicella infection. Previously reported cases of varicella myocarditis are reviewed.
