Notes: An undoped, semi-insulating GaAs crystal grown by the horizontal Bridgman method has been characterized by axial and radial resistivity and mobility measurements. Due to lower thermal gradients, defect densities for wafers from this crystal are less than those observed for liquid-encapsulated Czochralski crystals. Cathodoluminescent images display uniform luminescent intensity around dislocated regions indicating an absence of impurity gettering in these areas. Concentrations of neutral EL2, a native defect and principal deep donor in undoped GaAs, are reported for seed, middle, and tail-end wafers. The distribution of EL2 over the area of each wafer is shown. Wafers were also implanted with 29Si and furnace annealed to form shallow n layers. Capacitance-voltage profiles demonstrate reproducible peak carrier concentrations and penetration depths.

Notes: A simple procedure is described for numerical correction of conductivity and Hall-effect data in a (GaAs) sample which is near intrinsic or slightly on the n side of intrinsic, such that hole conduction affects the conductivity and Hall coefficient to a modest extent. The numerical procedure is based on the ratio of the measured Hall coefficient to that expected for intrinsic GaAs at the same temperature. One can thereby deduce the electron concentration n0 and the electron mobility, simply, but with reasonable accuracy. The method can be used for any temperature at which transport measurement are normally made with semi-insulating GaAs, and its use is demonstrated with data for three high-resistivity "undoped'' samples from crystals grown by a vertical Bridgman method.

Notes: Abstract Magnetization, susceptibility and Mössbauer spectra are reported for representative chlorite samples with differing iron content. The anisotropy of the susceptibility and magnetization of a clinochlore crystal is explained using the trigonal effective crystal-field model developed earlier for 1:1 and 2:1 layer silicates, with a splitting of theT 2g triplet of 1,120K. Predominant exchange interactions in the iron-rich samples are ferromagnetic withJ=1.2 K, as for other trioctahedral ferrous minerals. A peak in the susceptibility of thuringite occurs atT m=5.5 K, and magnetic hyperfine splitting appears at lower temperatures in the Mössbauer spectrum. However neutron diffraction reveals no long-range magnetic order in thuringite (or biotite, which behaves similarly). The only magnetic contribution to the diffraction pattern at 1.6 K is increased small angle scattering (q〈0.4 Å−1). A factor favouring this random ferromagnetic ground state over the planar antiferromagnetic state of greenalite and minnesotaite is the presence of pairs of ferric ions on adjacent sites, in conjunction with magnetic vacancies in the octahedral sheets. Monte Carlo simulations of the magnetic ground state of the sheets illustrate how long range ferromagnetic order may be destroyed by vortices forming around the Fe3+-Fe3+ pairs.

Notes: Abstract Although the ability to perform gene therapy in human germ-line cells is still hypothetical, the rate of progress in molecular and cell biology suggests that it will only be a matter of time before reliable clinical techniques will be within reach. Three sets of arguments are commonly advanced against developing those techniques, respectively pointing to the clinical risks, social dangers and better alternatives. In this paper we analyze those arguments from the perspective of the client-centered ethos that traditionally governs practice in medical genetics. This perspective clarifies the merits of these arguments for geneticists, and suggests useful new directions for the professional discussion of germ-line gene therapy. It suggests, for example, that the much discussed prospect of germ-line therapy in human pre-embryos may always be more problematic for medical genetics than adult germ-line interventions, even though the latter faces greater technical difficulties.
