Notes: [Auszug] All experiments were performed in vitro on sciatic nerve-sartorius muscle preparations from the frog, Ranapipiens maintained in a phosphate-buffered Ringers solution6 or a Tris-buffered, Na+-free, isotonic K+ propionate solution9. For some experiments, the phosphate-buffered Ringers solution was ...

Notes: Abstract Satellite observations, fromEinstein,IUE, andIRAS, have been combined with ground-based observations to derive the quiescent energy distribution of the symbiotic star AG Draconis. A detailed comparison is made between the combined observations and various steady-state composite models, including blackbody accretion disks.

Notes: Summary Recently discovered individuals in New Zealand of the North American speciesDrosophila pseudoobscura were analyzed for any divergence in mating behavior. Cultures collected from five localities in North American were mated with a stock from Rotorua, New Zealand. No significant divergence was obtained in any of the within North Americ, and more importantly, between North American and New Zealand mating experiments. Further analyses also showed no development of sterility between recently caught New Zealand and North American flies. We discuss our results in relation to others of this type.

Notes: Summary Yellow phenocopies ofDrosophila melanogaster were produced by raising larvae on α-DMT contaminated media. Using a survivorship test, the sensitive period for phenocopy induction was found to occur during the third larval instar of development, with increased survivorship at 1% α-DMT compared with lower concentrations. It was also found that treatment with α-DMT significantly slowed development. These findings are related to the relevant morphological and behavioral developmental pathways and to phenocopy induction.

Notes: Summary Are Epidermodysplasia verruciformis (E. V.) and disseminated flat warts different diseases? Are there any diagnostic criteria between them? In order to attempt answering these 2 questions, fundamental for prognosis and nosology, a comparative ultrastructural study was made of epidermal clear cells of 2 cases of E. V. and 4 flat warts from 4 patients of whom 3 were under immunosuppression drugs. The reason of cytoplasmic electron translucency was mainly a reduction in tonofilaments and keratohyalin amounts in E. V. and a centrifugal edema and vacuolization in flat warts. On the other hand, the number of ribosomes was raised in E. V. and reduced in flat warts. These findings allow differentiation between the 2 diseases and suggest a possible different host-virus relationship.

Notes: [Auszug] SIR-In an interesting and provocative article, Halstead1 rejected the anti-darwinian views of the Japanese biologist Imanishi. His rejection is apparently based on his negative impressions of Japanese society. Halstead remarked that: "the ordinary Japanese [is] condemned... to the rigid ...

Notes: Summary In an effort to further delineate the mechanism of infection and pathogenicity ofMycoplasma pneumoniae infections, the hamster and guinea pigs were used as experimental models. These animals were chosen because of previous experience. The local antibody response in addition to organism growth patterns were examined in detail. Histological examination was carried out to determine the pathological lesions which occur. The significance of these findings is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Drosophila pseudoobscura stocks maintained in laboratory culture for some time had altered mate recognition systems compared with recently collected control stocks. Three showed a significant deviation from random mating; in one, a tendency toward homogametic mating was recorded. Such deviations are in marked contrast to results from populations which have been recently collected from the field. Asymmetrical mating was observed in two of the crosses in the direction predicted by the Kaneshiro model.

Notes: Abstract The present data illustrate an important characteristic of the mate recognition system of individuals ofDrosophila melanogaster. This system showed a high degree of stability, and the stability occurred even though the populations under investigation were divergent in other characteristics. We review the results of other studies of this type, discuss our results in terms of the general characteristics of specific-mate recognition systems, and account for its stability in terms of the structure of the communication system.
