    Notes: Dynamic magnetic domain observation and eddy current loss of tape-wound cores are discussed up to 5 kHz. The cores are made of 17–22 μm thick (110)[001] oriented silicon steel strips. Dynamic domain patterns were observed by using SEM on the surfaces of the tape-wound cores. In order to distinguish the moving domain walls from the standing ones, the drive frequency of the core should not be integral multiples of the scan frequency of the SEM(50.0 Hz). The model which includes dynamic wall number, wall bowing, and velocity of each domain wall agreed comparatively well with the measured eddy current losses.

    Notes: The TbFeCo films were prepared at argon gas pressure PAr of 0.8 and 3.6 mTorr by using the facing targets sputtering (FTS) apparatus. The films showed the polar Kerr rotation angle θk as large as 0.43° at a wavelength of 830 nm. In polar Kerr hysteresis loops, the films with large θk showed the rectangular loops in which the gradient of magnetization at an applied field of coercivity was extremely large. Moreover, the films deposited at PAr of 0.8 mTorr showed the strong wavelength dependence of θk compared with the ones deposited at PAr of 3.6 mTorr.

    Notes: Impulsive stimulated Brillouin scattering is applied to a new high-resolution phonon spectroscopy, where phonons created by two crossing pump pulses are observed using diffraction of a cw probe light in both time and frequency domains. In time domain, real-time behavior can be detected sensitively using a digital oscilloscope, while in frequency domain, measurements with high resolution are attainable by means of a spherical Fabry–Perot interferometer. Several examples of the measurements on liquid samples are demonstrated for clarifying various aspects of the phonon generation by the present method: the mechanism of the generation under pulsed light irradiation, the propagation of the generated phonon, the resonance excitation, and the interference with the other nonlinear optical processes. The relation with the ordinary light scattering is also discussed.

    Notes: A new concept is proposed for the microactuation based upon magnetostriction. Magnetostrictive bimorph cantilever actuators and a traveling machine, composed of the magnetostrictive amorphous Tb-Fe and Sm-Fe thin films on a polyimide substrate, were fabricated. These actuators moved without power supply cables. The 3-mm-long cantilever actuator exhibited the large deflection above 100 μm in as low a magnetic field as 300 Oe and above 500 μm at resonant frequency in an alternating magnetic field of 300 Oe. Such unique characteristics suggest that magnetostriction is useful as the driving force of the microactuator.

    Notes: By annealing H-rich intrinsic a-Si:H films at 340 °C in a hydrogen atmosphere, we have prepared a series of samples with varying hydrogen content (CH), but essentially constant photoconductivity, Urbach energy, and microstructure. In this way, we have been able to eliminate some of the interfering factors contributing to the light-induced effect, thus enabling the influence of CH to be determined. A strong correlation is found between the stability and CH, supporting the involvement of hydrogen in the light-induced mechanism.

The effect of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC, L-αlecithin), a substance not containing arachidonic acid, on prostaglandin E (PGE) production of amniotic membrane was studied. DPPC (3.125800 μg/ml) stimulated PGE production of amniotic membrane (150200%), suggesting that lecithin, the major surfactant component, is directly involved in the mechanism of human parturition as a stimulator of PGE production.

    Notes: The hydrogenation effects on the solar cell property have been investigated in the sulfur (S) diffused n+-p solar cell. In the plasma-hydrogenated n+-p junction at 150 °C for 30 min, the carrier concentration of p-type substrate (Zn doped) decreased by one order of magnitude as the distance from the junction region becomes 0.7 μm. This indicates that the hydrogen passivation by atomic hydrogen is due to the form of the neutral hydrogen-Zn acceptor complex near the junction region. The InP solar cell properties, especially the conversion efficiency and the short circuit current of the solar cell, were remarkably improved by 150 °C hydrogenation. The mechanism for the hydrogen passivation effects on the InP solar cell is also discussed. It is shown that the increase of the solar cell efficiency and short circuit current after hydrogenation may be due to the formation of the n+-p−-p structure by the hydrogen-defect incorporation and adequate control of the carrier density in the p-type substrate.

    Notes: To evaluate the contribution of human lung mast cells (HLMC) to allergic inflammation, we investigated whether or not cytokines, including stem-cell factor (SCF), monocyte chemotactic and activating factor (MCAF), and RANTES, activate HLMC. SCF induced histamine release from dispersed HLMC in a dose-dependent fashion (P〈0.01). The release was 7.8 ± 1.0% at 500 ng/ml SCF (n= 9). This response was also observed in chopped lung tissue. HLMC from which surface IgE molecules had been removed by treatment with lactic acid responded to SCF, while these cells lost their response to anti-IgE. The process was relatively rapid and reached a maximum in 5 min. This response required extracellular calcium, and it was observed at 37°C, but not at 4°C or 20°. A brief preincubation (10 min) with lower concentrations of SCF, which were ineffective in releasing histamine, enhanced anti-IgE-induced histamine release (P〈0.05), while its enhancing effect was lost by the longer preincubation (30 min). SCF did not prime basophils to enhance stimulated-histamine release. Interleukin (IL)-1α, IL-1β, IL-3, IL-4, IL-5, granulocyte/macrophage-colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF), MCAF, and RANTES neither induced histamine release nor enhanced the release stimulated by anti-IgE after a 10- or 30-min preincubation. The combination of IL-3 and IL-4 showed no effect on histamine release from HLMC. Leukotriene (LT)C4/D4/E4 production by SCF was negligible, as compared with anti-IgE-induced LT production. SCF at 1.5 ng/ml augmented anti-IgE-induced LT generation significantly (536+ 117 pg/105 mast cells and 1569 ± 258 pg/105 mast cells; P〈0.01). These results provide further evidence that numerous aspects of the phenotype of mast cells and basophils are heterogeneous, including structure, relevant secretagogues, and pharmacologic control.

    Notes: Accumulation of basophils in inflammatory sites is an important aspect of the late-phase allergic reaction involving skin and upper and lower airways, suggesting the existence of mechanisms for basophil migration. Because haemopoietic growth factors have been shown to stimulate various functions of human basophils, we tested the ability of haemopoietic growth factors to migrate basophils in vitro. Both IL-3 and granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) induced migration of purified normal basophils (purity c. 80%) in a dose-dependent fashion at picomolar concentrations, while granulocyte (G)-CSF, macrophage (M)-CSF, and IL-4 had no effect at all. Chequerboard analyses indicate that migratory activity of both factors are chemokinetic. These results suggest that local production of both factors during allergic reactions might potentially play an initial role in the recruitment of basophils from the circulation to sites of inflammatory reactions.
