Notes: We demonstrate the first polyimide guest/host system which exhibits stable electro-optic response after parallel-plate poling. Such systems are based on a class of polyimides which, once cured, possess a clear glass transition in their dielectric relaxation spectra, characteristic of thermoplasticity. After doping with compatible nonlinear optical molecules the polyimide host system can first be thermally imidized (cured) and then poled with an electric field. High glass transition temperatures are achieved leading to excellent thermal stability of the poled electro-optic response.

Notes: Abstract Reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by phagocytic cells induce oxidative stress during chronic inflammation, ROS play a role in the pathogenesis of a broad range of diseases including autoimmune, cardiac and neoplastic abnormalities. We found that sera of patients with a variety of inflammatory dermatoses contain elevated levels of antibodies (Ab) binding to an oxidized DNA base derivative, 5-hydroxyme-thyl-2′deoxyuridine (HMdU) coupled to bovine serum albumin, as determined by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Patients with immune complex diseases and a history of neoplasm elaborated the highest titers of anti-HMdU Ab. Titers from sera of psoriatic subjects were lower than from the aforementioned groups but were still significantly elevated (p〈0. 001) above those of healthy controls. Treatment of inflammatory dermatoses with systemic antiinflammatory and cytotoxic drugs significantly lowered the titers [p〈0. 005 (immune complex) or p〈0. 001 (psoriasis and neoplastic) diseases], suggesting that this assay may be of value in monitoring the response to therapy in these diseases.

Notes: Abstract After a prolongued period of stratification (about 300 years) the Dead Sea overturned in 1979 and again in 1982. Its waters became saturated with respect to halite and the massive precipitation of halite which occurred in winter 1982/83 has been monitored. We followed the fate of the heavy metals during this period of physical and chemical changes. The concentrations of Zn, Cd, Pb and Cu in the Dead Sea waters have been measured by anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) which provided sensitive measurement of these elements after a minimal pretreatment of the samples (dilution 1: 1 and acidification). In the meromictic lake (prior to 1979), the concentrations of all four elements were larger in the deep anoxic layers. With the onset of halite precipitation a decline in their concentrations was observed. Most dramatic was the decrease in Cd, which practically disappeared from the water column in 1985. The coprecipitation of heavy metals with halite — collected by sediment traps in 1983 — was examined, as well as that of older halite recovered from a sediment core. Although concentrations of heavy metals were somewhat larger in recent halite, all halite samples had the same coprecipitation pattern: the concentration of Pb was the largest, followed by Cd, and that of Cu was the smallest. The apparent distribution coefficient was larger for Cd than for Pb. We estimated the amount of Cd which may have accompanied the deposition of halite during 1983–1985; it is compatible with its observed disappearance from the water column in 1985. The amounts of Pb and of Zn which are missing from the Dead Sea of 1985 are much larger than can be accounted for by coprecipitation with halite. A possible explanation is that the formation of halite crystals may have enhanced settling of particulates which in turn, may have scavenged Pb and Zn from the Dead Sea waters. Cu seems to be much less affected by the physical and chemical events which occurred in the Dead Sea during 1976–1985.

Description: DEKORP 3-B has been conceived in the early stage of DEKORP as one of three nearly parallel seismic profiles crossing the Rhenohercynian and the Saxothuringian Zone of the western central part of the Federal Republic of Germany nearly perpendicularly to the Variscan strike. DEKORP 3-A should connect 3-B to oil industry seismic profiles which had been recorded in the Leinegraben area, and are deep enough to cover the total thickness of the Earth's crust. During the discussions in 1990 on a cooperation programme with the Potsdam ZIPE institute there were various proposals, for example a prolongation of DEKORP 4 towards NW along the Thuringian Forest up to the Harz Mountains. But due to the very short time of preparation of the survey in 1990, only the proposal of a combination of DEKORP 3 with a modern seismic profile through the southernmost part of Saxony seemed to be realizable. This combination resulted - for the southern part of the profile - in a long seismic profile through the Saxothuringicum with the direction of the profile changing from NW-SE to SW-NE. The total length of the profile amounts to some 600 km and crosses very different tectono-geological units with different strike and dip. Thus, there was the question of how to record these varying strikes and dips, and yet to realize the aim of obtaining a unified data base for detailed comparisons along the profile by applying the same field parameters to all profile sections. The results are explained in section 2 of this paper. Section 3 gives a short overview of the piggyback experiments carried out along with the field survey of DEKORP 3/MVE-90. The last section reports on the processing of the near-vertical reflection seismic data along the main line and (only preliminary) of the cross lines. Special investigations of the data recorded on the two easternmost cross-lines on both sides of the Elbe Lineament are reported separately in chapter 2 of the publication on the eastern part of the MVE-90 profile.

Description: The determination of 3D-static corrections usually is possible only with the exact knowledge of thickness and velocity of the superficial layers. In order to determine these parameters extensive additional measurements are necessary, e.g. refraction seismics. These measurements can be reduced considerably if there is already a borehole in the survey area; the shots generated for the seismic survey can be recorded with a borehole geophone chain. The direct traveltimes determined from these records are lying on a 2nd-order plane (ideally a hyperboloid). If these traveltimes are influenced by e.g. differences in the elevations of the source location or velocity inhomogeneities, the first arrival traveltimes scatter around such a hyperboloid. The static corrections can be determined from the difference between the measured traveltime and the ideal hyperboloid. Further measurements are not required, because a precise knowledge of the parameters of the weathered layer is not necessary. In the following a method is presented (developed by Albrecht (1991) and Teichert (1991)) to determine the theoretical hyperboloid. Another method, described at the end of this report, is the determination of average velocities from picked and corrected first arrival traveltimes.
