Notes: Abstract Five infants, three girls and two boys, first had convulsions between the ages of 4 and 6 months. Although the aetiology of the attacks was unknown, all the infants had a family history of similar convulsions occurring at the same age and having a benign outcome. The attacks, which always occurred in a cluster, were promptly controlled, in four cases with phenobarbital and in one case with valproate. Seizures were partial with secondary generalization and were characterized by head and eye deviation (not always the same side in each attack) diffuse hypertonia and then bilateral limb jerks. The interictal EEG was normal. The ictal EEG showed diffuse discharge with onset in the central-occipital region. Laboratory, radiological and neurological findings were normal. A history in at least one paternal relative (the father in four cases) of similar seizures, occurring at the same age suggested a genetic predisposition. No seizures or EEG anomalies were observed during the follow up.

Notes: The structure of two-dimensional configurations of spherocylinders (discorectangles) generated by random sequential adsorption (RSA) is analyzed via the circular harmonic expansion of the pair distribution function and compared to that of equilibrium fluids at the same density. The structural differences are minimal for short particles but become more pronounced as the aspect ratio of the particles increases. An analysis of the correlations between particles which adsorb at high coverage with their nearest neighbors in saturated RSA configurations, reveals that the most probable relative orientation for particles with aspect ratio α≈2 is perpendicular. This observation helps to explain the maximum in saturation coverage as a function of particle elongation near the aspect ratio α=2.

Notes: We study the random sequential adsorption (RSA) of unoriented anisotropic objects onto a flat uniform surface, for various shapes (spherocylinders, ellipses, rectangles, and needles) and elongations. The asymptotic approach to the jamming limit is shown to follow the expected algebraic behavior, θ(∞)−θ(t)∼t−1/3, where θ is the surface coverage; this result is valid for all shapes and elongations, provided the objects have a nonzero proper area. In the limit of very small elongations, the long-time behavior consists of two successive critical regimes: The first is characterized by Feder's law, t−1/2, and the second by the t−1/3 law; the crossover occurs at a time that scales as ε−1/2 when ε→0, where ε is a parameter of anisotropy. The influence of shape and elongation on the saturation coverage θ(∞) is also discussed. Finally, for very elongated objects, we derive from scaling arguments that when the aspect ratio α of the objects becomes infinite, θ(∞) goes to zero according to a power law α−p, where p=1/(1+2(square root of)2). The fractal dimension of the system of adsorbed needles is also discussed.

Notes: We study the kinetics of random sequential adsorption (RSA) of anisotropic bodies (rectangles, ellipses, spherocylinders or, more precisely, discorectangles, and needles) at low-to-intermediate coverages. In this regime, the adsorption probability can be expressed as a power series in the coverage. We calculate numerically the second- and third-order coefficients of the series and compare the results to simulation data. The results for the low-coverage kinetics are then combined with the asymptotic results of Paper I [J. Chem. Phys. 97, xxxx (1992)] to construct approximate equations for the adsorption probability over the entire coverage range. While the equations provide a reasonably good description of the RSA kinetics, they produce unsatisfactory estimates of the saturation coverages. The effect of particle shape on the adsorption kinetics and surface structure is discussed. Finally, the available surface function is compared with that corresponding to equilibrium configurations of the adsorbed particles.

Notes: Abstract Nineteen aneurysmal bone cysts and five angiomas of bone were treated by selective arterial embolization. The median follow-up was 22 months. In 17 patients healing occurred with complete relief of symptoms; in 11 of these almost complete ossification of the lesion resulted. In the remaining cases, little or no ossification was apparent but ossification may take 1 year or more to occur. No recurrence was observed in any of these cases. Recurrence occurred only in two cases. In one, growth of the recurrence stopped after a second embolization, and the X-rays showed no change. Selective arterial embolization represents a treatment of choice in aneurysmal bone cyst and angioma of bone especially of the spine, sacrum, or pelvis. In these sites embolization replaces surgery which might be hazardous due to intraoperative bleeding.

Notes: Abstract Arterial embolization was performed in 36 patients with tumors of bone and soft tissue. Embolization was the only treatment in seven patients with benign lesions. Fourteen patients underwent embolization before surgery to obtain hemostasis and/or reduce tumor size. Fifteen patients with inoperable primary bone tumors or skeletal metastases underwent palliative embolization. The best results were obtained in aneurysmal bone cysts.

Notes: Abstract Recently published data show that stroke incidence is no longer declining, while case fatality rates has had a less pronunced fall in recent years than in the past. Projections of the increasing number of elderly people, combined with the greater risk of stroke in old age, suggest that in the forthcoming decades we will be faced with an increased request of health resources for patients with stroke. We have therefore used data from a community-based study on stroke incidence and outcome to project the number of first ever strokes, death from stroke and handicap from stroke in Italy, up to the year 2016. Results show that incidence will increase by 22.2%, and death at 6 months from first ever stroke by 29%. However, since patients already handicapped for other reasons are more likely to die from their stroke, the net number of newly handicapped persons will only increased by 5%. These results suggest that in the next decades the major increase in request of health care resources will result from the acute event and the immediate post-ictal phase, and not from the management of chronic handicap after a stroke.

Description / Table of Contents: Sommario È state ricercata retrospettivamente la presenza della immagine iperdensa del tratto orizzontale della cerebrale media (“dense middle cerebral artery sign”) negli esami TAC eseguiti in 90 pazienti consecutivi con sintomatologia riferibile ad ischemia acuta nel territorio del circolo carotideo.
Notes: Abstract The presence of a dense appearance of the horizontal part of the middle cerebral artery (the “dense middle cerebral artery sign”) was looked for on CT scans taken on admission in 90 consecutive patients with ischemic stroke in the carotid artery distribution. The outcome of the 14 patients with the sign was poorer than that of 76 patients without the sign (Odds ratio 4.3). We suggest that this sign could be a useful prognostic variable in the acute phase of an ischemic stroke.

Notes: Summary We analysed transcription of the DNA region immediately downstream of the origin of replication in the chlamydial plasmid pCT. This region comprises two convergent open reading frames (ORF7, ORF8), encoding putative polypeptides that are homologous to each other and with C-terminal domains typical of the phage integrase family of proteins. Northern blot and RNA 5′ end mapping analyses indicated that both ORFs were transcribed in the late phase of the chlamydial replicative cycle. RNA mapping showed the presence of a transcript starting 31 nucleotides (nt) before the ATG start codon of ORF7, and two temporally regulated transcripts starting 59 and 89 nt upstream of the ATG start codon of ORF8. Two abundant RNA species of 225 and 415 nt were also identified as overlapping anti-sense transcripts (AS-RNAs), complementary to the 3′ end of ORF8 mRNA, with identical 5′ ends but different 3′ ends. In vitro and in vivo experiments in Escherichia coli showed that the σ70-RNA polymerase complex was capable of initiating RNA synthesis at the same sites as observed in Chlamydia trachomatis for ORF7 and AS-RNA transcripts, but was not able to transcribe ORF8. In accord with this, sequences at −10 and −35 nt upstream of the RNA 5′ ends resemble σ70 consensus promoters in the case of ORF7 and AS, but not in the case of the two ORF8 transcripts. Therefore, transcription of ORF7 and ORF8 is controlled by different types of promoters. The same AS-RNA 3′ ends found in C. trachomatis were detected in E. coli, at two putative ϱ-dependent termination sites, and further downstream, at a C-independent termination structure. The results provide the first demonstration of transcriptional mechanisms that are potentially shared by E. coli and Chlamydiae.
