    Notes: Abstract In central Europe and to some degree in North America, the so called “new type” forest damages occur over large areas. Various studies indicate the declines are more or less frequently associated with nutritional disturbances that have developed within rather short time periods. The most common disorder is a Mg deficiency that produces specific discoloration symptoms such as tip-yellowing in Norway spruce. But also K deficiencies and other disturbances exist in coniferous as well as in deciduous forests. Good correlations between the site specific substrate chemistry and the actual nutritional status of the trees and stands were found. To explain the sudden and widespread development of the forest declines adverse anthropogenic influences such as increased N and H+ deposition, land use and forestry mismanagement as well as natural stresses are discussed. The hypothesized causal mechanisms are multiple, but include generally soil degradation processes associated with losses of alkaline nutrient ions from the rooted solum. Recent and previous fertilization (and liming) experiments have shown that a fast and sustained revitalization and restabilization of declining forest ecosystems marked by nutrient deficiencies can be achieved. This was demonstrated by chemical and histological foliar analyses and the visible improvement of the trees. Soil analyses also revealed a positive change of the chemical soil status when site and stand specific fertilizer applications were utilized in the appropriate amounts. However, under certain site and stand conditions risks and limitations exist that have to be evaluated when fertilization practices are discussed. To overcome or minimize these influences the treatments must be adapted to the site, and stand specific fertilization needs as indicated by soil and foliar analysis, humus form, hydrologic parameter and atmospheric deposition rates.

    Notes: Abstract Since the mid-1970s new types of forest damage are observed in the Federal Republic of Germany. Typical damage symptoms in coniferous tree species are needle yellowing, reddening and premature loss of older foliage. Needle analysis carried out in damaged Norway spruce stands indicated that these phenomena, most of all needle yellowing, are influenced by the nutritional status of the trees. For the investigated sites Mg but also other elements, particularly P, S, K, Ca and Zn may play a causal role. As N is the most abundant element in the plant its form of uptake is important for a balanced nutrition. On the contrary to NO3-N high NH4-N uptake reduces the uptake of cations, particularly Mg and Ca, eventually inducing foliar discoloration symptoms on specific sites. Fertilizer experiments indicated that Mg fertilization is an appropriate tool to mitigate forest damages associated with Mg deficiency for a sustained time period. The application of N in the form of NH4-N may impede Mg uptake. This mechanism may cause severe damage in forest areas receiving continuously high NH4-N deposition.

    Notes: Abstract New types of forest damage associated with Mg (and K) deficiency can be corrected by proper fertilization using fast release Mg (and K) fertilizers or Mg limestone. Sufficient Mg and K supply provided by former fertilizer applications inhibited the appearance of typical deficiency symptoms in areas where unfertilized control trees are now characterized by yellowing. In these areas N input rates vary appreciably. Addition of N fertilizers, particularly in the form of NH4-N, can induce nutrient imbalances as was demonstrated for Mg and K. From these disorders relative growth reductions may result. However, sustained negative effects will probably only occur when large doses are applied or when atmospheric N input rates are high. Increased N uptake due to N fertilization indicated that the investigated sites were not saturated with N. Needle analysis is a very simple as well as valuable tool to characterize the nutritional status of forest tress and stands when it is carried out correctly. Nutrient ratios should receive the attention they deserve, rather than concentrate exclusively on the evaluation of absolute nutrient contents.

    Notes: Abstract Healthy forests are essential for life on earth. Their multiple benefits include sustainable production of wood and other products, soil protection, air and water purification, wildlife habitat, noise control, various types of recreation, but also climate regulation and CO2 storage. Owing to man-made influences, forests have been endangered since a long time. In various parts of the world these adverse impacts are now representing a risk for human life. For example, the still increasing destruction of tropical and subtropical forests leads to detrimental soil erosion problems and great losses of soil fertility including soil C. Furthermore, atmospheric pollution brought about forest declines in Europe, North America and elsewhere. In order to overcome these and related problems a variety of efforts have been established. In commercial forests of the temperate/boreal zones forest management practices including fertilization regimes focusing on sustainably increasing yields have been utilized for several centuries. However, new management strategies are under research and/or have been implemented in these forest ecosystems to mitigate the so called new types of forest damage. As these declines are frequently associated with nutritional disturbances fertilizer applications have proven useful when conducted properly. Agro-forestry is one approach to reduce the further deterioration of tropical/subtropical forests. Also rehabilitation of devastated land ist partly concentrated on afforestation. With the ever increasing demands of a fast growing human population and increasing CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere, proper multi-purpose forestry on a permanent or short rotation basis or in the wide realm of agro-forestry is essential for mankind. In many cases adequate forest management will only be possible when soil fertility is restored and/or maintained through fertilization/manuring considering the demand of a specific forest stand/system under specific site conditions. Clearly, also the potential to increase the CO2 storage capacity of forests is often limited by insufficient nutrient availability. However, in general this site specific limitation can be overcome easily by proper nutrient supplementation.
