Notes: It will be shown that a mathematical reformulation of the Glansdorff–Prigogine local equilibrium hypothesis makes it possible to associate the Glansdorff–Prigogine stability criterion to the sign of a quadratic form. A comparison with other known results of literature is presented. Moreover, the equivalence between the local potential method of Glansdorff–Prigogine and the Keizer–Lavenda's generalization of the Onsage–Machlup Lagrangian formulation will be proven.

Notes: The relationship was analyzed between cell kinetics, defined as 3H-thymidine labeling index (3H-TdR LI), and clinical responses for 35 previously untreated patients with locally advanced oral cavity squamous cell carcinomas. Patients were treated with three cycles of vincristine and bleomycin (VB) or of VB plus methotrexate (VBM), given by intra-arterial infusion followed by surgery. The objective clinical response rate was higher after VBM treatment than after VB, whereas overall clinical response rates were similar for patients with slowly or rapidly proliferating tumors. The probability of relapse-free survival at 4 yr and overall survival was significantly higher for patients with high 3H-TdR LI tumors given VBM than for those given VB. For patients with slowly proliferating tumors, there were no differences in relapse-free survival and overall survival between the two treatments. These data suggest that patients with rapidly proliferating tumors benefit from primary intensive chemotherapy treatment including methotrexate and that cell kinetics can be used to formulate rational clinical protocols for oral cavity cancers.

Notes: Abstract PURPOSE: Liver metastases are the main cause of death in patients with colorectal cancer. We defined the proliferative activity of a metastatic liver cell population to investigate its potential role as an indicator of clinical outcome in patients with metastatic disease of the colorectum. METHODS: The S-phase cell fraction, evaluated asin vitro [3H]thymidine-labeling index, was determined on liver metastases of primary colorectal cancers from 75 patients. RESULTS: Cell proliferation was not related to the degree of liver involvement, the site of the primary cancer, or the time of presentation of liver metastases. Survival at 2 years was statistically different for patients with slowly proliferating (78 percent) or rapidly proliferating liver metastases (47 percent) (P=0.024). The risk of death for patients with high [3H]thymidine-labeling index lesions was consistently threefold that of patients with low [3H]thymidine-labeling index lesions throughout the observation period. Bivariate analysis showed that cell proliferation was a further prognostic discriminant within the subsets characterized by a different degree of liver involvement. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate that cell proliferation is a good prognostic marker even in patients with liver metastases from colorectal cancer. The clinical implications of the marker could be further potentiated by considering it in association with some clinical aspects of known prognostic relevance.

Notes: Abstract The functioning of a carbon dioxide laser is generalized from the standard low nitrogen concentration, low temperature coolant to the high nitrogen concentration, room temperature air free convection cooling regime. The efficiencies of the two regimes are comparable. Theoretical arguments are presented to support this new regime.

Notes: Abstract The reaction between titanium(IV) and 2-(2-thiazolylazo)-p-cresol-(TAC) in aqueous methanol media at apparent pH 4.0–5.6 results in a intensely coloured complex that is stable for at least 2 h. The combining ratio is 1 ∶ 1 cation ∶ TAC. Beer's law is obeyed up to 5.0 μg/ml titanium(IV) at 580 nm. The apparent molar absorptivity at 580 nm is 9.82.103 l.mole−1.cm−1 and the detection limit obtained was 5 ng/ml titanium (IV). A spectrophotometric method for the simultaneous determination of titanium and iron with TAC is proposed.

Notes: Summary A case of cerebral granular cell tumor (GCT) is reported. Histologically, the growth was composed of benign astrocytes, granular cells and transitional forms between both elements. Glial fibrillary acidic protein was detected in the glial component and, to a lesser extent, in the granular cells. Alpha-1-antichymotrypsin was demonstrated in the latter component only. Ultrastructural study also supported the evidence that neoplastic astrocytes became granular cells. The survey of the literature and our own results suggest that GCTs in this particular location, even when histologically benign, seem to have a worse prognosis than the low-grade supratentorial astrocytomas.

Notes: Abstract Flatfishes of Monterey Bay, central California, undergo species replacements with increasing depth along a transect from 100 m on the continental shelf down to a depth of 1400 m on the continental slope. The Dover sole, Microstomus pacificus, differs from the other local flatfish species by undergoing an extensive ontogenetic vertical migration, occupying all depth zones at different life stages, and having its maximum spawning biomass in the oxygen minimum zone between 600 and 1000 m. Size-activity relationships and depth-activity relationships for the glycolytic enzyme lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and for two enzymes associated with aerobic metabolism, malate dehydrogenase and citrate synthase (CS), were examined in white-muscle tissue of shallow-living, deep-living and ontogenetically-migrating species. Scaling coefficients (b) for weight-specific enzyme activity (log activity)=a+b (log wet weight), varied in sign as well as magnitude for fishes living at different depths. In the shallow-living California halibut Paralichthys californicus, LDH scaled positively (0.39) and CS scaled negatively (-0.15) with size, a pattern observed previously for most shallow-water fish species. The permanently deep-living species, the deepsea sole Embassichthys bathybius, differed in that both LDH and CS scaled strongly negative (-2.0 and-1.5, respectively). For the ontogenetically migrating Dover sole Microstomus pacificus, there was a shelf-slope transition. For the shelf specimens (≤200 m), LDH scaled positive (0.11) and CS negative (-0.29) and for the slope specimens (≥400 m), LDH scaled negative (-0.65) and CS strongly negative (-0.63). Rex sole, Glyptocephalus zachirus, showed a similar shelf-slope transition. Intraspecific depth-enzyme activity differences were not incremental, but changed abruptly between the continental shelf stations (100 to 200 m) and the continental slope (400 to 1400 m). Based on comparisons with laboratory-maintained individuals, the decline in the metabolic capacity of the white muscle of Dover sole is a phenotypic response to the low food and oxygen conditions of the continental slope. Contrary to expectation, anaerobic capacity (LDH activity) decreased in response to low oxygen conditions, suggesting that in a permanently hypoxic environment such as the oxygen minimum zone the metabolic strategy may be to not incur an oxygen debt that would be difficult to pay back.
