Abstract:
The microstructure of grain boundaries in Nd-Fe-B sintered magnets has been investigated by means of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) in order to clarify the appearance of the “bcc grain boundary phase” reported earlier. No phase with bcc structure in TEM samples prepared by ion thinning in high vacuum has been observed but an amorphous like phase without bcc structure formed on both surfaces of a TEM sample during ion bombardment for thinning. Heating of the samples under the presence of oxygen induces the precipitates of bcc microcrystals in the amorphous like phase. This clearly suggests that the “bcc boundary phase” is formed through the preparation procedure of TEM samples.
