Abstract: Supplemental mass pollination (SMP) success rate in a mature Douglas-fir (Pseudotsugamenziesii (Mirb.) Franco) seed orchard was studied with the aid of a unique electrophoretically detectable allozyme marker. Operational applications, and branch applications that were carried out one, two, or three times, were conducted during the orchard's maximal pollen release (i.e., the height of pollination). No significant increase in seed-yield traits (total number of seeds per cone, number of filled seeds per cone, and seed efficiency) was observed between wind-pollinated and SMP-treated (operational and one and multiple branch visits) cones. However, multiple branch visits (18%) showed significant increase in SMP success rate when compared with the operational visit (8%) or the one branch visit (9%) results. No significant increase in SMP success rate was obtained when the number of branch visits was increased from two (17.8%) to three (17.9%). It was concluded that operational SMP had the potential to improve the genetic value of the treated Douglas-fir crops even under high pollen load. The degree of improvement is dependent directly on SMP fertilization success and indirectly on the genetic value differential between the supplemented and the orchard's ambient pollen, the frequency of application, and the quality of the pollen applied (i.e., viability).

Abstract: Five allozyme polymorphisms were used to analyze the mating system in a Sitka spruce seed orchard in Saanichton, British Columbia. Allelic frequencies differed between the pollen and maternal pools at three of the five loci, with alleles rare in the maternal pool being even rarer in the effective pollen pool. Minor differences in pollen allelic frequencies were observed in the upper vs. lower crown. The multilocus outcrossing rate of the upper crown (t m = 0.909) exceeded that of the lower crown (t m = 0.764). Single‐locus estimates of the outcrossing rate were significantly heterogeneous, with the lowest estimate of outcrossing, t = 0.773, observed for PGM‐2 locus. Analyses of the mating system for the three maternal PGM‐2 genotypes revealed heterogeneous pollen allelic frequencies and heterogeneous outcrossing rates, possibly due to assortative mating at this locus.

Abstract: The balance between allocating energy resources to reproduction or growth has considerable theoretical interest. Conflicting ecological requirements and evolutionary pressures often necessitate a trade-off in energy allocation. We obtained measurements on seed-cone production and annual ring width of 365 Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) trees from 29 open-pollinated families for 8 years. Phenotypic, genetic, and environmental correlations were computed for seed-cone production and ring width for each year. Five of the eight environmental correlations were negative (range −0.077 to −0.305), reflecting the reality of the trade-off in physiological terms. Six of the eight genetic correlations were negative (range −0.199 to −0.776), indicating that a trade-off exists at the genetic level between energy allocation to reproduction and to somatic growth. These findings agree with the current theory of life-history evolution. Key words: Pseudotsuga menziesii, cone production, annual ring width, genetic correlation.
