Notes: Abstract The behavioral and electrophysiological activity of a mimic [(Z,E)7,9,11-dodecatrienyl formate] of the major sex pheromone component [(Z,E) 9,11,13-tetradecatrienal] of carob moth was assessed. Wind-tunnel bioassays demonstrated that the formate was as effective as natural gland extracts, and significantly more effective than the trienal alone or than the trienal blended with two minor pheromone components, in evoking source contact. Dispensers containing the formate were as effective as trienal-containing blend lures in attracting males when placed at the same dosage in traps in date gardens. Single-cell recordings showed that at least two olfactory neurons, differentiated by spike amplitude, are located in the long trichoid hairs on male carob moth antennae. Dose-response relationships indicated that puffs from cartridges loaded with at least 0.1 μg of the formate or of the trienal were necessary to elicit spiking by either the small or the large-spiking cell within a sensillum. Cross-adaptation studies demonstrated that both compounds stimulated the same large-spiking cell. The frequencies of spikes evoked from the large cell when stimulated by emissions from 0.1-μg, 1-μg, or 10-μg cartridges of either the formate or the trienal were not significantly different, suggesting that the formate is an effective mimic of the trienal at the antennal receptor cell level.

Notes: Abstract A case-control study of 107 colon cancer cases and 486 controls from an oncological clinic in Istanbul was conducted to examine the association between occupational physical activity and colon cancer in Turkey, where incidence of this disease is low. Only two of the four activity measures showed evidence of an increased colon cancer risk for sedentary jobs (time spent sitting OR= 1.5 and occupational energy expenditure OR= 1.6); neither was statistically significant. Subjects below age 55 showed higher risk associated with sedentary jobs than did the older age group, probably due to their adoption of a more western lifestyle, including dietary habits, less activity, and other factors that may interact to increase the risk of colon cancer.

Notes: A multiple-site case-control study of 15 cancers (stomach; colon; rectum; larynx; lung; melanoma; skin; female breast; male breast; cervix; ovary; uterus; prostate; testis; and bladder) was conducted to evaluate their association with occupational physical activity and socioeconomic status (SES). A hospital-based study population (3,486 male cases and 379 female cases, and 2,127 male and 244 female controls) was established in an oncological treatment center in Istanbul, Turkey, from 1979–84. Assessment of physical activity and SES was based on job titles held by the study subjects. Two measures of physical activity were developed based on energy expenditure and ‘sitting time’ during working hours. Observed risks were adjusted for age, smoking, and SES. Elevated risks were observed among workers who held sedentary jobs for cancers of the colon (odds ratio [OR=1.6), rectum (OR=1.3), melanoma (OR=1.9), male breast (OR=1.4), prostate (OR=5.0), and ovary (OR=2.0). Cancers of the cervix and uterus showed significantly decreasing risks with decreased activity. Risks of cancers of the colon, rectum, larynx, ovary, and melanoma were enhanced after risks for physical activity indices were adjusted for SES, while the associations between physical activity and cancers of the prostate, cervix, and uterus were weakened after SES adjustment. Risks of melanoma rose significantly with both activity indices after SES adjustment. The results of this study support previously reported associations between physical activity and cancers of the colon and rectum observed in developed countries, and provide additional evidence for cancers of the larynx, prostate, cervix, uterus, and melanoma, and point out the importance of SES in evaluation of physical activity and cancers of the colon, rectum, larynx, prostate, breast, cervix, and melanoma in developing countries.

Notes: Abstract Three sex pheromone components of the carob moth were isolated and identified from the extract of female pheromone glands, using a variety of techniques including coupled gas chromatographic-electroantennographic recordings, coupled gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric analysis, microozonolysis, electroantennographic assays of monounsaturated standards, wind-tunnel bioassays, and field trials. The major component was identified as (Z,E)-9,11,13-tetradecatrienal, a novel lepidopterous pheromone component structure. Two minor components, either one of which improves the upwind flight response of males when blended with the major component, were identified as (Z,E)-9,11-tetradecadienal, and (Z)-9-tetra-decenal.

Notes: Developments in dosage of bulk solids. Dosage of bulk solids is a fast developing field of process- and production automation. Developments are determined directly by the current demands of the production process, with the properties of the bulk solids and the process itself playing an important role. A survey of proven dosage techniques from the viewpoint of the operating principles, properties, applications, and limitations demonstrates the great variety of problem solutions. An important difference between the individual dosage techniques is the nature and accuracy of mass limitation. The most accurate techniques are the gravimetric dosage methods, with discontinuous weighing giving the greatest accuracy. Developments have been greatly influenced by the state of weighing cell techniques, weighing electronics and computer engineering. The development of measured data acquisition and processing of control, and of instrumentation are described, compared, and assessed. A trend towards system responsibility and development on the part of manufacturers is noted. A accurate dosage of bulk solids requires constant flow of the solids and finely adjustable control devices. The principal interferences in bulk solids flow and measures for their avoidance are shown by means of examples. Successful solution of dosage tasks ultimately requires agreement between manufacturers and processors with regard to definition, determination, and control of dosage accuracy during calibration and during long term operation.

Notes: Stirring Devices in Screw Metering Equipment - Action and Design Strategy. The accurarcy of metering by screw dosage equipment with or without gravimetric control depends primarily on the flow of material to the discharging screw. In the case of cohesive solids, stirring devices are generally required to prevent bridging. Experimental observations show that flow conditions correlate directly with the intensity of stirring. Mass flow in the metering container and hence optimum constancy of metering are attainable only from certain stirring efficiencies upwards. Cases of interference to metering due to poor flow of solids can be explained and overcome by modified dimensioning. The effects of the principal parameters - geometry and speed of rotation of the stirrer - are studied with the aid of two stirrer configurations - viz. overhead and concentric. Straightforward model calculations provide a mathematical method of estimation for optimum and reliable stirrer dimensioning also applicable to strongly cohesive solids.
