Notes: The reaction center from the nonsulfur purple bacteriumRhodobacter sphaeroideshas been crystallized in a new form. The crystals grew in the presence of polyethylene glycol 4000, the detergent β-octyl glucoside, and the amphiphiles heptane triol and benzamidine hydrochloride, using the sitting drop method. The space group of these crystals is tetragonal, P41(43)212, and the cell constants are a = b = 141.5 Å and c = 276.7 Å with probably 2 proteins per asymmetric unit. A native data set has been set collected to a resolution of 2.8 Å consisting of 56,332 unique reflections (50,731 with F 〉 2σ) with anRsym of 9.5%. Analysis of the diffraction data is underway using molecular and isomorphous replacement. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notes: Focal adhesion kinase (FAK) is a structurally unique nonreceptor protein-tyrosine kinase that localizes to focal adhesion plaques. Regulation of its activity has been implicated in diverse signaling pathways, including those mediated by extracellular matrix/integrin interactions, G-protein coupled receptors for mitogenic neuropeptides, and certain oncogene products. To gain evidence for specific processes in which FAK may be involved in vivo, a study was initiated to determine its expression pattern during mouse development. FAK expression was detected in early embryos and appeared to be distributed throughout all cell types at about the time of neurulation. Subsequent to neural tube closure, expression became particularly abundant in the developing vasculature. This included expression in the medial layer of arteries populated by smooth muscle cells. In vitro studies using cultured rat aortic vascular smooth muscle cells demonstrate that FAK phosphotyrosine content is dramatically elevated in response to plating cells onto the adhesive glycoprotein, fibronectin. Also, enhanced tyrosine phosphorylation of FAK is observed in these cells upon stimulation with the vasoconstrictor angiotensin II. Thus, in vascular smooth muscle cells, like fibroblasts, FAK appears to play a role in signaling mechanisms induced by extracellular matrix components as well as G-protein coupled receptor agonists. The combined results of this study suggest that signaling through FAK may play an important role in blood vessel morphogenesis and function. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notes: Although zinc selenide and related materials are promising for blue light-emitting diodes and lasers, present performance is unsatisfactory. The blue radiative efficiency at room temperature is low and the decay time of luminescence is correspondingly short. It is argued that the problem is non-radiative recombination by the Hall-Shockley-Read mechanism at deep levels and that the concentration of these levels must be high. Experimental evidence for the existence of such levels is presented. Characterisation and control of deep levels will be essential for progress in this area.

Notes: We have measured the absorption spectrum of the n = 1 free exciton in ZnSe from 4.2 to 190 K. By fitting to a Lorentzian, we have found the exciton peak energy, width and oscillator strength. The values are compared with published ones, which were mainly obtained by less direct methods. The importance of the electron-hole interaction in radiative processes in ZnSe is emphasised.

Notes: An estimate of the detonation pressure of carbohydrate-metal composite explosives has been obtained experimentally by use of carbon resistor pressure gauges mounted in the wall of the confining tubes. The composite explosives were formulated from a pharmaceutical mixture of 10/90 nitroglyccrin/ß-lactose by weight, and was rendered detonable by inclusion of flaked aluminum and both flaked aluminum and ammonium perchlorate. The detonation pressure of the nitroglyccrin/ß-lactose mixture with 10 percent aluminum by weight was approximatcly 1.1 GPa. The incorporation of 30 percent ball-milled ammonium perchlorate to this formnlation increased the detonation pressure to 12.2 GPa. These pressures must be considered as estimates of the true detonation pressure, because of (a) the suspected non-ideality of the detonation state of these explosives, (b) the statistical nature of the response of the gauges, and (c) possible inconsistencies in the interpreatation of the gauge records. It is recommended that a number of gauges be used in a given experiment, and the results be averaged as one means of cireumventing the above difficulties.

Notes: The state of the art relative to the measurement of shock and detonation pressures of the magnitude generaled by condensed high explosives is reviewed. Carbon resistors have been shown to provide a relatively inexpensive and direct method for such measurements, provided adequate calibration data are available. The gauge is fabricated by heat-sealing the carbon resistor (470 Ω, 0.125 W) into a suitable plastic material such as polystyrene; when subjected to a strong shock wave, the gauge undergoes compression and the conductivity increases in proprtion to the magnitude of the pressure. The present investigation was concerned with the experimental derivation of calibration equations relating the pressure (in gigapascal) as a function of the conductivity change ΔG (in siemens). The point of inflaction occurring at approximately 2.36 GPa, corresponding to 0.02082 S, is in agreement with previous observations in the literature. Additional experiments are being planned to resolve a problem concerning oscillatory ringing in the gauge voltage records.
