Notes: Abstract Solvent effects on the lowest-energy electronic transitions of two merocyanines derived from quinoline have been studied using nine different solvent parameters reported in the literature. Relative merits and deficiencies of different parameters have been assessed. From the correlation results, attempts have been made to propose a solute-solvent interaction mechanism. For an assorted set of 19 solvents, as well as for a set of nine hydroxylic solvents, excellent results are obtained with correlation equation involving ET(30) and Hilderbrand's solubility parameter δH.

Notes: Abstract Various defects arising from lattice mismatch and coordination incompatibility at the cation sites are known to lend the cuprates a metastable state at temperatures and pressures where they exhibit superconductivity. The present paper considers the metastability induced by coordination incompatibility at Cu(1) sites in oxygen-deficient 123 type systems and looks for their possible effects on charge and spin degrees of freedom. Depending upon the concentration of oxygen vacancies, the resulting unstable charge state at the Cu(1) sites is shown to either temporally fluctuate or spatially equilibrate, providing a mechanism for the 90 K and the 60 K plateaus, with a peak in the former observed in the YBa2Cu3O7-y , samples prepared under thermodynamic equilibrium conditions.

Notes: Summary Conformational properties of two nucleoside analogs, namely nebularine and isoguanosine have been investigated by using PCILO (Perturbative Configuration Interaction using Localized Orbitals) method. Nebularine (9-β-ribofurnosyl purine) is a naturally occurring purine nucleoside which is structurally similar to adenosine and it inhibits the growth of tumor cells and influenza B virus. Isoguanosine is one of the two naturally occurring analogs of guanosine. Both C2′-endo and C3′-endo sugar puckerings have been considered for both the molecules with preselected values of torsion angles around C2′–O2′ and C5′–O5′ bonds. The results indicate that nebularine has conformational preferences very similar to those of its parent nucleoside, adenosine; whereas the conformational properties of isoguanosine are very different from those of guanosine as well as adenosine. The important implications of these results have been discussed in terms of the biological activity of these molecules.

Notes: Abstract Five copolymer samples containing different mole fractions of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate (EHMA) were prepared by bulk polymerisation at 70°C using 0.2% benzoyl peroxide as an initiator. The copolymer composition was determined by1H NMR spectroscopy. Molecular weight of copolymers was determined by gel permeation chromatography and viscosity measurements. Thermogravimetric experiments were conducted to evaluate activation energy for the degradation of copolymers. Two to four reaction stages for the weight loss were observed in the copolymers. A decrease in thermal stability was observed by an increase in EHMA content.

Notes: Abstract A detailed study was carried out on six biochemical parameters and four yield attributes using multiple regression analysis to investigate their relationship in the mulberry silkworm,Bombyx mori. The study generated new information on the importance of digestive amylase activity for the survival of the silkworm and revealed the inability of other enzymes to affect this relationship. Data also substantiate the observations made earlier on the genetic variability of amylase in the mulberry silkworm. Analyses extend the positive role of alkaline phosphatase and invertase in the expression of the other yield traits studied and indicate the definite possibility of using biochemical markers for silkworm breeding.

Notes: Abstract The antisense mRNA complementary to the sense strand of Met-enkephalin encodes the antisense peptides, His-Glu-Ala-Pro-Ile (compound 88/62). The antisense peptide and its (Gln1)-analogue (compound 88/63) have synergestic effects on the opioid activity of Met-enkephalin in the GPI test system.

Notes: Abstract The highest point of the plasma concentration-time profile, C max , is currently used by regulatory agencies to assess the rate of drug absorption after single dose administration of oral products. It is, however, quite insensitive, and a number of new measures of rate have been proposed. Using simulations, several approaches toward measuring rate were tested. A set of model scenarios for drugs with typical mean characteristics and statistical distributions was investigated. Using different kinetic models of disposition, the time course of the concentration in plasma was simulated. Intraindividual and interindividual variability and assay error were modeled using Monte Carlo techniques. The accuracy, precision, and ease of use of the various measures of rate were evaluated by simulating crossover design clinical trials and then determining the probability of declaring bioequivalence as a function of differences in rates of absorption between test and reference formulations. All of the rate measures tested showed a degree of insensitivity to changes in rate and no universally superior measure was found. Indeed, the main conclusion is that the choice of a measure should be based on simulations of the particular situation in a bioequivalence trials.

Notes: Summary One hundred and thirtysix hybrids were developed utilizing four cytoplasmic genetic male sterile lines (V 20A, Zhen Shan 97A, IR 46829A and IR 46830A) and 34 effective restorers. Heterosis, heterobeltiosis and standard heterosis were found to be significant for grain yield and other yield attributing characters in most of the hybrids. The heterosis for grain yield was mainly due to the significant heterosis for the number of spikelets per panicle, test weight and total dry matter accumulation. Interestingly, it was found that most of the higher yielding hybrids were accompanied by significant negative heterosis for harvest index. Hybrids shorter than the shortest parent and earlier than the earliest parent were not observed; hybrids with intermediate to tall plant height having nonlodging habit could be developed. Eighteen hybrids gave more than 20% grain yield than the standard checks. These were evaluated for their stable and consistent yield performance over four seasons. The results on analysis for stability parameters indicated that the hybrids V 20A × Himdhan and Zhen Shan 97A × Mahsuri were stable over environments.
