Abstract: The structure of social stratification in contemporary China is closely related to the situation of the nation's direct ownership and distribution of social resources. Power status, which combines the country's political and administrative power, became the most significant of the many forms of social status. Through the `identity system', `unit system' and `administrative ranking system', the nation has imposed the distribution of social positions throughout the entire society, and thus shaped the basic systematic framework of the structure of social stratification in contemporary China. This structure of social stratification has enabled the state to gain more legitimacy and efficiency than it has ever had before and has promoted the modernisation process in Chinese society. However, it has gradually directed people's efforts or aspirations towards higher status or changed their position toward power. Moreover, this system may not be able to adapt with the changes and developments taking place in society.

Abstract: Traditional anionic dyeing of cotton requires large amounts of salt to assist dye sorption. This paper reports a method of using trimethylolmelamine (TMM), a com mon durable press finish, to treat cotton for dyeing. TMM pretreated cotton has re markably improved affinity for anionic dyes and no longer needs the assistance of salt in the dyebath. Furthermore, effluents from such processes contain much less dye than effluents from ordinary salt-assisted dyeings. This technology not only increases the efficiency of dyeing without salt, it also considerably decreases the burden of effluent treatment. By this method, cotton can also be dyed with acid dyes.

Abstract: Taiwan is an island situated in the subtropics. The lowest average temperature is around 15°C (59°F) during winter). Despite the mild climate, carbon monoxide intoxication still occurs frequently, especially during the winter. We studied which meteorological factor(s) affected the occurrence of carbon monoxide poisoning in Taiwan. Retrospective data over a period from December 1, 1986, to December 31, 1991, from patients who reported with carbon monoxide poisoning to the Poison Control Center, together with meteorological data were analysed. We found that a lower daily average temperature, especially while a special regional circulation pattern, called a 'cold front' or 'cold surge' (during winter) covers the Taiwan area, is strongly related to the occurrence of CO poisoning.

Abstract: Can solar eclipses generate AGWs? If so, how are they excited? This is still an open question and a long-standing dispute within academic circles. The annular solar eclipse which traversed the Chinese mainland on September 23rd 1987 afforded a rare and excellent opportunity to study this problem. Vast amounts of data of microbarometric pressure at ground level, radio-sondage, solar radiation and ionospheric probing were obtained from various observation stations. By making use of these abundant data synthetically, an important conclusion has been reached: there is an obvious accord between the period of the solar eclipse, AGW and the fluctuation period of solar direct radiation. All the solar eclipse AGWs in different places come from two different kinds of atmospheric oscillation, i.e., the forced oscillation generated directly by changes in direct solar radiation and the buoyancy oscillation in the local atmosphere above various spots. The former has a longer wave period and a larger amplitude, depending directly upon the radiation change during the solar eclipse; the latter has a shorter period and smaller amplitude, depending upon thermodynamic stability in the local atmosphere during the solar eclipse and the atmospheric moisture condition.

Abstract: The cranial computed tomography findings in 22 critically ill patients with systemic lupus erythematosus in the intensive care unit were reviewed to document the spectrum of pathology encountered and to assess the contribution of cranial computed tomography to the diagnosis and management of such patients, many of whom had severe multisystem disease. Thirty-one scans were performed in 22 patients, all of which were abnormal. Premature cerebral atrophy was identified in fifteen patients (68%), cerebral infarction in five (23 %), intracranial haemorrhage and cerebral oedema in four each (18%), and hydrocephalus in three (14%). Six patients had multiple pathologies. The cranial computed tomography findings confirmed the clinical diagnosis in 13 of 22 cases (59%) and altered it in nine (41%). The contribution to diagnosis and management justifies transportation and computed tomography scanning. The contribution to patient outcome, however, is uncertain as mortality was 91%.

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to establish a static anthropometric data bank for Chinese civilians in Taiwan using a computer-analyzed photographic method. Stratified random sampling was applied to decide the sampling site; sample size was established by considering standard errors in a pilot study. Then a photographic method was employed in addition to direct measurement of selected body dimensions. In all, 933 subjects were measured. The data were entered via a digitizer into a microcomputer for processing. The resulting anthropometric data bank was organized by age, sex, and occupational groupings. Comparisons with data from previous studies were made, and recommendations for further research presented.
