Abstract: The near-infrared Fourier transform (NIR FT) Raman technique permits the measurement of Raman spectra without interference by fluorescence. Absorption by molecules containing X-H bonds in the NIR range requires a 180° scattering geometry. In this way, Raman spectroscopy of samples on surfaces is possible, both the detecting of small spots and the mapping of the sample distribution over larger areas. The spatial resolution extends into the micrometer range. Mapping of the inorganic pigment distribution of an initial letter of a mediaeval manuscript is demonstrated. For time-resolved measurements, the step-scan technique, previously developed for infrared spectroscopy, may be used in NIR FT-Raman spectroscopy as well. It allows the study of photochemical and photophysical processes, the application of modulation techniques, and the investigation of “noisy” samples. Photo-isomerization of the dye merocyanine 540 has been observed with the step-scan technique upon periodic excitation with a flash lamp.

Abstract: This study is concerned with the service provided to adolescent patients with eating disorders admitted to private hospital. The patients' parents were asked to evaluate the service. Parental satisfaction was assessed by means of questionnaire devised for this purpose and comments were elicited as to how the service could be improved. Parents of consecutive series of 56 patients were asked to complete the questionnaire 6 months after admission; 82% (N=46) responded. Most parents were pleased with the service provided but nevertheless many made some criticisms (35%) or suggestions for improvement (37%). The parental responses were discussed with the staff involved in treatment, resulting in changes to the service.

Abstract: Cooper and Fairburn's Eating Disorder Examination (EDE) is a semi-structured interview designed to assess the specific psychopathology of eating disorder subjects. It was employed in a study of 116 Sydney patients for 2 purposes: first, to determine its usefulness in an Australian context; and second, to compare patients with anorexia nervosa, bulimia and atypical eating disorder. The instrument appears to be quite appropriate for studies in Australia. With respect to the second aim, the results emphasize the essential similarity in psychopathology between the three diagnostic groups. The relevance of this latter finding to the categorisation of eating disorders in the DSM-IV proposals is discussed.

Abstract: The demographic and clinical features of 12 male patients with anorexia nervosa were investigated by means of a retrospective analysis of their medical records. The clinical characteristics of the male patients were found to be remarkably similar to those reported for female patients and our findings concur with previously published literature. There appears however to be a greater tendency to exercise excessively. The importance of recognising anorexia nervosa in males is emphasized.

Abstract: Previous research has documented qualitative changes in certain cognitive abilities during the older adult years, such as in short-term memory, perceptual and motor skills, and attentional capacities. Other work has suggested that a number of significant age-related changes, across a variety of cognitive abilities, are based on social experiences, such as occupational or recreational activities. The current study is based on earlier research by Perlmutter and her colleagues (1990) and examines age and skill-related differences among adults engaged in a social-recreational activity. BINGO players, ranging in age from nineteen to seventy-four, and having from less than two months to over twenty years of playing experience, were given a variety of psychometric, cognitive, and experimental measures. The participants were also observed as they played real BINGO games. No age-related differences were found on the psychometric or memory measures, suggesting that BINGO playing experience may have positive benefits for many older adults. Skilled players at all age levels were found to be more efficient in their game-playing actions. The oldest and most experienced players did not differ from the younger, equally experienced, players on the cognitive and skill-based tasks. These findings demonstrate the need to investigate adaptive competence in those situations in which social-environmental factors play a role in enhancing older adults' cognitive skills.
