    Notes: The β-diketonate process for chemical vapor deposition Y1Ba2Cu3O6.5+x is extended to deposition on enlarged areas up to 20 cm2. The films are prepared on monocrystalline SrTiO3 and reveal a surface topography comparable to films by laser ablation. The inductively measured transition temperature Tc is up to 93 K and the transition width is smaller than 1 K; Tc is well reproduced from run to run. The critical current density jc at 77 K attains values as high as 6×106 A/cm2 in zero magnetic field; the current carrying capacity in magnetic fields up to 8 T is presented.

    Notes: In the present study we assessed the effect of leukotriene C4 on ciliary beat frequency in vitro. Chicken tracheas were sliced into thin rings and ciliary activity was viewed microscopically. Ciliary beat frequency was measured through an optical fibre by a fast Fourier transformer analyser and recorded on an oscilloscope. Ciliary beat frequency was measured at one fixed point during 30 min at room temperature in RPMI-HEPES medium alone and in medium containing leukotriene C4 at a range of concentrations (10−6–10−9M). Our results demonstrate that leukotriene C4(10−7 and 10−8M) caused a significant decrease in ciliary beat frequency in all tracheal rings tested (mean decrease of 24%). The specificity and Ca2+ -dependency of leukotriene C4 activity was elucidated by the ability of FPL 55712 (SRS-A specific antagonist), Ca2+ -free medium, calcium channel blockers (nifedipine and verapamil) and the calmodulin inhibitor trifluroperazine to abrogate its effect on ciliary beating.

    Notes: Conclusions 1. The installation of a conical transitional segment between a tower (shaft)-type water intake-outlet and penstock affects a significant reduction in head loss in the pump mode, but has virtually no effect on the magnitude of the latter in the pump mode. 2. The existence of a conical transitional element in the pump mode appreciably lowers the discharge velocities of the flow and increases the effective height of the water-passing openings by 1.5–1.7 times when the height of the intake openings h≥0.5dp. 3. The head losses in the intake-outlet decrease in the pump mode of operation with increasing degree of expansion of the transitional diffusor segment.

    Notes: Conclusions 1. In a pump regime the discharge openingsoperate full section at a height h≤(0.2–0.3)dc; separation of the flow from the sill of the openings occurs at larger values of h. For tower diameter Dtw=2dc the height of the throughgoing flow increases slightly at the exit with increase of the the height of the discharge openings to h〈0.6dc and for Dtw≥3dc it decreases. When h≥0.6dc the height of the throughgoing flow is constant and at the exits is about (0.55–0.6)h for Dtw=4dc, (0.27–0.35)h for Dtw=3dc, and (0.18–0.22)h for Dtw=4dc. During operation of the discharge openings full section ( $$\bar h$$ ≤ 0.3), an increase of the tower diameter is accompanied by an increase of nonuniformity of the distribution of velocities over the height of the openings; the opposite picture is observed with the occurrence of separation of the flow from the sill, i.e., for $$\bar h$$ 〉 0.3. 2. In the pump operating regime for a height of the openings h≥(0.5–0.6)dc, the intakes/outlets with an outside diameter of the discharge openings Dtw=2dc have smaller values of the resistance coefficients (by 0.02–0.06) than for Dtw≥3dc, and for h〈(0.5–0.6)dc intakes/outlets with a tower diameter Dtw≥4dc are preferable with respect to head losses. 3. In a turbine regime without trash racks, smaller head losses are observed in intakes/outlets with Dtw≥3dc; a decrease of the tower diameter to Dtw=2dc leads to a considerable increase of the head loss coefficient: by 0.05–0.18 in the range of heights of the openings h=(0.6–0.3)dc; the presence of trash racks of the same height leads to an increase of the resistance coefficient of the intake/outlet with Dtw=2dc. 4. With consideration that with a change in the outside diameter of the discharge opening, the increase of the head loss coefficient with increase of their height in the pump regime changes in magnitude and signt and also that investments in construction depend on the outside diameter of the discharge openings (tower), the final choice of the size of the intake/outlet can be made only on the basis of a technicoeconomic comparison of variants with the use of the results of the studies presented in this article.

An increase of the radius of transition of the sill of orifices with the cylindrical end section of the pressure conduit is accompanied by a substantial decrease of the values of the total coefficient of head losses of the inlet-outlet in a pump regime for all heights of the orifices. Smaller values of head losses are observed for a flat shape of the central part of the ceiling (bottom of the cylinder gate). In the turbine regime an insignificant decrease of head losses is noted for h〈0.5dc with increase of the radius of transition in the interval R=(0.2–0.4)dc. 2. In the case of a tapered end section of the pressure conduit, a change in the shape of the central part of the ceiling as well as an increase of the radius of transition of the sill of the orifices with a flare has almost no effect on head losses in the inlet-outlet in pump and turbine regimes.
