Notes: Linear instability waves in supersonic shear layers are analyzed. Both viscous and inviscid disturbances are considered. The basic state is obtained by solving the compressible laminar boundary-layer equations or is specified by the hyperbolic tangent profile. The effects of the velocity ratio and temperature ratio are determined. The numerical results show that the maximum growth rate depends nonlinearly on the velocity ratio. The results also substantiate the convective Mach number as a compressibility parameter for mixing layers.

Notes: Chitin, the β1,4-linked polymer of N-acetylglucosamine, is a fibrous polysaccharide that in many yeasts helps to maintain the structure of the mother-bud junction and in filamentous fungi is often the major supporting component of the cell wall. We have previously described a Candida albicans chitin synthase, CHS1. The DNA and derived protein sequences of a second gene, CHS2, are presented and compared with previously published gene sequences. Northern blot analysis shows that strikingly different levels of synthase 1 and 2 expression occur during yeast and hyphal phases of Candida growth.

Notes: Abstract. Six isolates of infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV) were obtained from trout or eel farms in Taiwan in 1987. By using the electrophoretic analysis of 35S-methionine-labelled early viral polypeptide patterns and silver-stained ds RNA gel patterns, a comparison of these isolates with the three archetypal IPNV serotypes (AB, SP and VR-299) was made. They were all identical with VR-299, both in the RNA and early viral polypeptide patterns. From the results obtained, it was apparent that the VR-299 serotype of IPNV was just as widespread in eel as in trout in Taiwan. This is the first case of VR-299 isolation from eel.

Notes: The stability of a polymeric nematogen's chemical sequence was studied by differential scanning calorimetry, optical microscopy, and 13C-NMR; the nematogen studied was a thermotropic polyester and had a periodic chemical structure. Model compounds were used to investigate transesterfication in the melt at different temperatures with the addition of phenol or benzoic acid as analogues of polymer end groups. Ester interchange reactions at high temperature were found to be partly suppressed when acidic end groups of the periodic nematogen were capped. However, sequence reorganization was completely suppressed in capped nematogens when temperatures remained below the isotropization transition of the nematogen investigated. Rapid disordering of the periodic nematogen was observed above the nematic-isotropic transition, suggesting that both chemical and physical factors play a role in sequence redistribution of periodic nematogens. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
