    Notes: Room-temperature stimulated emission in ZnSe/ZnS0.18Se0.82 multiple-quantum-well structure is reported. An optical excitation threshold around 300 kW/cm2 at 300 K and 8.4 kW/cm2 at 10 K was measured. An unsaturated optical gain coefficient of the order of 5×102 cm−1 has been measured at low temperature.

    Notes: A ZnSe/ZnSSe blue semiconductor laser was demonstrated to show very low threshold by direct photopumping of the ZnSe active layer. The lowest threshold at the excitation wavelength of 445 nm was 10 kW/cm2 at 300 K which is equivalent to the current density of 3.6 kA/cm2. This is the lowest threshold ever reported in II-VI photopumped lasers and is approaching the theoretically calculated threshold. The characteristic temperature of the threshold, which characterizes the temperature dependence of the threshold in the exponential form, was 124 K up to the measured 400 K and was comparable to III-V double-heterostructure lasers. The differential quantum efficiency remained the similar level up to 400 K and its decrease observed at 400 K was within 23% of the efficiency at 300 K.

    Notes: Summary Serotonin (5-HT) caused a dose-dependent accumulation of inositol monophosphate (IP-1) in rat hippocampal slices (maximal effect +172%, EC50=630 nM) in the presence of LiCl. The 5-HT response was blocked potently by a non-selective 5-HT receptor antagonist metergoline and a 5-HT1C/ 5-HT2 receptor antagonist ritanserin. The 5-HT2 receptor antagonist ketanserin and spiperone were, however, less potent at inhibiting the 5-HT response, m-Chlorophenylpiperazine (mCPP), a 5-HT1C receptor agonist but a 5-HT2 antagonist stimulated directly PI turnover, yet mCPP inhibited 5-HT-stimulated PI response. These findings indicate that both 5HT1C and 5-HT2 receptors are involved with a complicated interaction of each receptor in 5-HT-stimulated PI hydrolysis in rat hippocampus. 10-Day treatment with para-chlorophenylalanine (PCPA), a 5-HT synthesis inhibitor, resulted in a significant increase (maximal effect +225%, EC50=580 nM) in 5-HT-stimulated IP-1 accumulation with no substantial change in EC50 value, which suggest that subchronic treatment with PCPA enhances the 5-HT-mediated PI hydrolysis in rat hippocampus.

    Notes: Abstract The combination of the anodic oxidation of naphthalene on a PbO2 electrode with the mediated oxidation of naphthalene in the cathode chamber using the Cu(i)/Cu(ii) redox couple in a divided electrolytic cell produces 1,4-naphthoquinone with a current yield of 77%. The by-products are 1-naphthol and 2-formyl-trans-cinnamaldehyde. The pathways for the formation of these products are discussed.

    Notes: Summary The Chiang Khan meteorite fell on 18th November, 1981 at Chiang Khan, Thailand. It consists of olivine, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, Fe-Ni metal, troilite, chromite, plagioclase, glass, and phosphate in order of abundance. Olivine forms barred or porphyritic chondrules, and its composition is uniform (average Fo80.2), close to the average composition of olivine in equilibrated H chondrites. Orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene also have compositions similar to those in equilibrated H chondrites. Both well-defined chondrules and their broken fragments are present in the recrystallized matrix. Microcrystalline plagioclase and clinopyroxene often occur in the groundmass of chondrules, but clear interstitial plagioclase is absent. Chemical composition of chromite plots in the field of chromites in H chondrites. Chiang Khan meteorite is thus classified as an equilibrated H 5 type chondrite. The equilibrium temperatures estimated by using mineral pairs are as follows: Opx-Cpx 800–900°C; Ol-Chromite 510°C. Water content is 0.24 wt %, and the hydrogen isotopic composition (ΔD) is −89.5‰ In the thermal demagnetization experiment magnetization steadily decreased from 0 to 500°C, whereas the remanent magnetization obtained in the A.C. demagnetization experiment is very unstable, probably owing to the large grain size of the Fe-Ni metal.

    Notes: Summary The concept of ex vivo expansion of the human progenitor cell population was tested in this study. In the presence of interleukin-3 and -6 we compared the abilities of various liquid culture conditions of human blood-derived hematopoietic progenitor cells to yield a suitable condition for the expansion of blood progenitor cells. Although the best result was obtained in the gas-permeable bag culture system, the enhancement effect (maximum of 3.8-fold for granulocyte/macrophage colony-forming units and 3.0-fold for erythroid burst-forming units) lasted for only a short period (〈 6 d). The results of this study are disappointing for clinical use, and attempts with currently available technology appear to be limited in their potential.

    Notes: Summary In the presence of anti-insulin antibody, 2- to 3-fold enhancement of 125I-insulin binding to liver membranes was observed when binding was estimated by the radioactivity of 125I-insulin bound to the membrane pellets. However, after 125'I-insulin was covalently cross-linked to liver membranes using disuccinimidyl suberate in the presence of anti-insulin antibody, sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and autoradiography showed that 125I-insulin bound to the α-subunit of the insulin receptor was inhibited by antiinsulin antibody in an dose-dependent manner. More importantly, at an anti-insulin antibody dilution range between 1:50 and 1:5,000, sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis revealed two 125I-labelled bands of mol wt 62,000 and 27,000, while only one band of mol wt 130,000 was revealed in the absence of anti-insulin antibody. These Mr=62,000 and Mr=27,000 bands were found to be the heavy and the light chain of anti-insulin IgG molecules respectively. Pepsin digested anti-insulin serum had only an inhibitory effect on 125I-insulin binding to liver membranes. Non-immunized guinea pig serum or IgG completely abolished the enhanced effect of anti-insulin antibody. Further, this enhanced effect was inhibited by Fc fragment-specific anti-IgG serum or H&L-chain-specific anti-IgG serum in a dosedependent manner. Protein A also inhibited the effect of antiinsulin antibody. In IM-9 lymphocytes and human red blood cell ghosts, which have no Fcy receptors, enhancement of insulin binding was not observed in the presence of anti-insulin antibody. These data suggest that anti-insulin antibody-induced enhancement of insulin binding to liver membranes is not due to the enhanced binding to the insulin receptor itself but probably due to the binding of insulin-anti-insulin antibody complex to the Fcγ receptor.

    Notes: Summary A competitive radioimmunoassay for the quantitative determination of glycated haemoglobin was developed. The antiserum, obtained by immunizing guinea pigs with reduced glycated human albumin, was capable of identifying and quantitating the glucitollysine residues of glycated Hb after reduction with sodium borohydride. To simplify the sample preparation we introduced trichloroacetic acid precipitation to remove unreacted sodium borohydride instead of using dialysis or gel filtration. Using this procedure, our radioimmunoassay became relatively simple and provided satisfactory within- and between-run (1.3–2.8% and 1.9–5.4% coefficient of variation, respectively). The radioimmunoassay method was compared to the measurement of HbA 1c by high performance liquid chromatography which is the most widely used method for quantitating glycated Hb. For this purpose glycated Hb was measured in normal glucose tolerance, impaired glucose tolerance, and diabetes mellitus groups based on WHO criteria. Both assays were able to discriminate between the normal and diabetic groups. In addition, while the determination of glycated Hb by the radioimmunoassay method was able to clearly discriminate between the normal and impaired glucose tolerance groups, the determination of HbA 1c by the high performance liquid chromatography method failed to discriminate between these two groups. Moreover, 15 of the 20 impaired glucose tolerance patients exceeded the upper normal range (mean normal values + 2 SD) in radioimmunoassay. But all 20 patients with impaired glucose tolerance were within the upper normal range in HbA 1c values. These results demonstrate that the measurement of glycated Hb by radioimmunoassay is more sensitive than the measurement of HbA 1c by high performance liquid chromatography since it can discriminate between the normal and impaired glucose tolerance groups.

    Notes: Summary Hyperuricemia is commonly recognized in adolescents and adults with cyanotic congenital heart disease. We report a case of a male infant with hyperuricemia, Taussig-Bing anomaly, and interruption of the aortic arch. The patient underwent correction of interrupted aortic arch and pulmonary arterial banding at the age of 7 days. Hyperuricemia appeared when he was 2 months old (max 17.7 mg/dl) and persisted until he underwent a Jatene operation at the age of 10 months. The hyperuricemia improved gradually after the disappearance of hypoxia and polycythemia. The laboratory findings suggest that hyperuricemia can result from uric acid overproduction due to secondary polycythemia, impairment of uric acid excretion by the kidney, or the acceleration of anaerobic metabolism. Allopurinol and benzbromarone together were partially effective treatments for hyperuricemia in this patient with cyanotic congenital heart disease.
