Notes: A diphenyloctatetraene (DPOT) doped bibenzyl crystal is a model system for studying the spectroscopic properties of polyenes because the well-defined local environment of the DPOT eliminates most of the inhomogeneous broadening that obscures many transitions. The spectra of the three DPOT sites in this host are measured with site-selective laser spectroscopy to define the vibrational, electronic, and vibronic states of the S0, S1, and S2 electronic states. Multiply resonant four-wave mixing spectra were then obtained using a coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy method (CARS) for a series of different laser frequencies in order to define the CARS excitation profile (CEP). The CEP profile of the C=C and C–C stretch vibrations showed strong enhancement of the four-wave mixing from the S2 state but only the C=C stretch mode had observable enhancement from the S1 state. Contrary to previous studies in pentacene, azulene, and perylene, DPOT did not exhibit enhancement of vibronic transitions that would permit mode selective or site-selective nonlinear spectroscopy. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We describe a new nonlinear, nonparametric process that provides a direct measure of vibrational enhancement in four wave mixing. This process has 14 coherent pathways that create the final coherence. In the limit of no pure dephasing and a single vibrational resonance, the 14 pathways combine into a single process that is vibrationally enhanced. The frequency and concentration dependence expected for this process matches that observed in experiments with the methyl- and methylene C–H stretch vibrations in hexane samples. The third-order nonlinear susceptibility for the C–H vibrations was measured by the interferometric method of Levenson and Bloembergen. The vibrational nonlinearity was observed as a difference between the nonresonant electronic contributions and the contribution that depended on resonance with the vibrational absorption transition. The measurements show that the vibrational enhancement is 50 times larger than the nonresonant electronic contribution and it shows that spectroscopic methods based on resonant nuclear nonlinear polarizations are observable above the electronic nonlinear polarization background. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract This study examined the reliability and validity of an adapted version of the Separation Anxiety Test (SAT) for 8–12–year-old children. Clinical (N= 21) and nonclinical (N= 21) participants were compared on responses to the SAT coded using the Seattle scoring indices. Inter-rater reliability was established at an acceptable level, however, test-retest reliability and internal test construction were less satisfactory. Sample comparisons found the clinical participants described themselves as less securely attached and more avoidant of emotional expression than the control participants. The indices of attachment security were also related to various socioemotional aspects of functioning. In addition, the results indicated that describing “self” as different from a similar “other” child was significantly related to parental reports of poor social competence. Results are discussed in relation to an Attachment Theory framework as well as from a clinical perspective.

Notes: Abstract Equipment and handling methods for the preparation of soil mesocosms were developed. The mesocosms were used to investigate the interrelationships between mesofauna and microflora in a coniferous forest soil. Soil monoliths were taken from the ground, defaunated by deep-freezing, wrapped in nets to control reimmigration of different faunal size-classes, and replanted in the field for 8 months. in a practical test the technique described here proved to be an inexpensive field method for producing a replicated series of mesocosm in a short time. Deep-freezing is appropriate for defaunating soil monoliths. The fine nets effectively exluded meso-and macrofauna. No significant differences were found in the abundance of Enchytraeids and Collembola between recolonized mesocosms and the undisturbed control at the end of the study period. In contrast, oribatid mite abundace was still greatly reduced in the recolonized esocosms. Dominance structure and species composition of the more dominant oribatid species in the different treatments were apparently similar. To compensate for the low colonization ability of oribatids, a reintroduction of selected animal size-classes to defaunated monoliths is recommended.

Notes: Abstract Changes in the selectivity of molecular recognition systems on sol-gel entrapment are reported. Thermodynamic effects are exemplified by studies of the metal-ion complexing agent Eriochrome Cyanine R (ECR). In aqueous solution this binds strongly and selectively to Al3+, whereas in a TMOS-based sol-gel matrix it is selective for Cu3+. Thermodynamic effects, due to restricted translational freedom of water molecules or different solvent structure and isolation of ligands, can explain these observations. Effects of entrapment on molecular recognition by a large conformationally flexible molecule have been studied using a tris-terminated PAMAM dendrimer. The dendrimer conformation and its complexation with Cu2+ changes on entrapment, and binding of aromatic carboxylic acids such as ibuprofen can be detected by changes in visible absorption and surface plasmon resonance using spun films of the sol-gel composite. These effects show that in addition to providing a porous entrapment matrix of good optical quality, sol-gels may be used to alter the binding characteristics of the entrapped receptors.

Notes: Abstract In order to investigate the role of sucralfatein active ulcerative colitis, 60 patients wererandomized to receive either sucralfate enemas (20 g/100ml) or methylprednisolone enemas (20 mg/100 ml). The enemas were administered twice daily for oneweek, and then once daily for three weeks. Clinicalevaluation was documented at entry and at two weeks andfour weeks. The sigmoidoscopic appearance of the rectal mucosa was scored, and rectal biopsiestaken at entry and at four weeks. Results indicatedsimilar reduction in diarrhea and rectal bleeding at twoweeks and at four weeks. Sigmoidoscopy demonstrated similar significant improvement in themacroscopic appearance of the rectal mucosa in bothgroups (8.28 to 6.20 in sucralfate group, P 〈 0.02;and 8.72 to 6.36 in the methylprednisolone treatedgroup, P 〈 0.04). Histologic assessment, likewise, showed similar improvements in the two groups. Thisstudy indicates that sucralfate enemas may be useful inthe treatment of ulcerative proctosigmoiditis.
