    Notes: This study explores the field emission properties of nitrogen-doped diamond grown by microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition. Over 70 nitrogen-doped diamond samples were grown on silicon and molybdenum under varying process conditions. Under certain conditions, films can be grown which exhibit photoluminescence bands at 1.945 and 2.154 eV that are attributed to single substitutional nitrogen. Photoelectron emission microscopy with UV free electron laser excitation indicated a 0 or negative electron affinity. Field emission characteristics were measured in an ultrahigh vacuum with a variable distance anode technique. For samples grown with gas phase [N]/[C] ratios less than 10, damage from microarcs occurred during the field emission measurements. Samples grown at higher [N]/[C] content could be measured prior to an arcing event. Contrary to other reports on nitrogen-doped diamond, these measurements indicate relatively high threshold fields (〉100 V/μm) for electron emission. We suggest that the nitrogen in these films is compensated by defects. A defect-enhanced electron emission model from these films is discussed. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Small cell carcinoma of the cervix is an uncommon aggressive variety of cervical cancer. Between 1982 and 1993, eight cases of this disease were diagnosed at the Queensland Centre for Gynaecological Cancer among 1586 cervical cancers. Treatment results have been poor with one long-term survivor. Literature review suggests that aggressive chemotherapy combined with surgery and/or radiotherapy may improve survival.

    Notes: Cold cathode structures have been fabricated using AlN and graded AlGaN structures (deposited on n-type 6H-SiC) as the thin film emitting layer. The cathodes consist of an aluminum grid layer separated from the nitride layer by a SiO2 layer and etched to form arrays of either 1, 3, or 5 μm holes through which the emitting nitride surface is exposed. After fabrication, a hydrogen plasma exposure was employed to activate the cathodes. Cathode devices with 5 μm holes displayed emission for up to 30 min before failing. Maximum emission currents ranged from 10–100 nA and required grid voltages ranging from 20–110 V. The grid currents were typically 1 to 104 times the collector currents. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Selective growth of arrays of silicon-doped GaN (Si:GaN) pyramids for field emitter applications has been achieved. The electron emission characteristics of these arrays has been measured using techniques such as field emission, field emission energy distribution analysis (FEED), photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM), and field emission electron microscopy (FEEM). The field emission current–voltage (I–V) results indicate an average threshold field as low as 7 V/μm for an emission current of 10 nA. It is suggested that the low threshold field value is a consequence of both the low work function of Si:GaN and the field enhancement of the pyramids. The results of the FEEM and FEED measurements indicate agreement with the field emission I–V characteristics. The FEED results indicate that the Si:GaN pyramids are conducting, and that no significant ohmic losses are present between the top contact to the array and the field emitting pyramids. The PEEM and FEEM images show that the emission from the arrays is uniform over a 150 μm field of view. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Sequence divergence in the ribosomal genes of known strains and isolates of aquatic denitrifying bacteria was investigated using restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis. The same cultures were characterized for their homology with antibody and gene probes for nitrite reductase (NiR), a key enzyme in the denitrification pathway, and for amplification with a set of polymerase chain reaction primers designed to amplify a portion of the NiR gene. The NiR probes were developed from Pseudomonas stutzeri (ATCC 14405) and several P. stutzeri strains were included in the analyses. The RFLP analysis clustered most of the P. stutzeri strains together, but detected considerable diversity within this group. Isolates from three aquatic environments exhibited within —and among — habitat diversity by RFLP. Hybridization with the NiR probes and amplification with the NiR primers were not correlated with the clustering of strains by rDNA RFLP analysis. The relationships among strains deduced from ribosomal DNA RFLP reflect heterogeneity within the P. stutzeri group and among other pseudomonads, and the patterns differ from those inferred from specificity of the NiR probes.

    Notes: Abstract  Three experiments examined the effect of either withdrawal from diazepam, or repeated treatment with the convulsant, pentylenetetrazol (PTZ), on behaviour and seizure threshold. The behaviours measured were on the elevated plus maze and in the four- plate test; seizure threshold was measured as dose of PTZ infused via the tail vein to the first clonic twitch. In experiment 1, we examined the effect of either single or repeated withdrawal from diazepam using a procedure in which the drug was administered SC in a slow release depot. Three cycles of withdrawal from diazepam were compared to a single withdrawal experience. A single withdrawal from diazepam following chronic treatment gave rise, 72 h following the last dosing, to behavioural changes, suggestive of anxiety, in both tests, but did not result in a reduced convulsant threshold. In contrast, repeated withdrawal resulted in a reduction in sensitivity in several measures of anxiety, but sensitised the mice to the convulsive effects of the PTZ. The unexpected failure to find an increased sensitivity to a convulsive agent following a single withdrawal from SC diazepam was examined in experiment 2. The seizure threshold following a single withdrawal of mice which had received diazepam chronically IP in aqueous vehicle was significantly reduced relative to vehicle-treated controls, whereas that of animals receiving the same dose SC in oil, was not. It is argued that the difference may arise from the animals treated repeatedly with IP diazepam unintentionally experiencing repeated withdrawal, since the half-life of the drug by this route is short. In experiment 3, repeated sub-convulsant PTZ treatment reduced the convulsant threshold (the dose of PTZ required to give rise to the first clonic twitch), but had no significant effect on the behavioural measures of anxiety compared to a single dose of PTZ or vehicle controls. The results suggest that repeated withdrawal from chronic treatments with diazepam sensitises mice to convulsant stimuli in a manner resembling the effects of repeated administration of sub-convulsant doses of PTZ, but that neither repeated PTZ nor repeated diazepam withdrawal results in increased sensitivity to anxiogenic stimuli; rather, repeated withdrawal from diazepam may reduce the susceptibility of mice to behavioural measures of anxiety.
